Components and Design

My initial impressions of these massive headphones were very positive because of the large “ear pods” and extra padding at the bridge of the headset. I love headphones with adequate padding and good qualities that distribute the weight evenly on my head. The headset is pretty light due to the plastic frame. I’m not too thrilled about the use of plastic because it takes away from the headset’s structural integrity that could ultimately reduce their longevity after extended use.

Here’s a close-up shot of the padding under the top bridge of the headset. It is quite thick and seems to have a dense piece of foam underneath the plush exterior lining.

Plantronics embossed the Gamecom logo on the side panels of the headset bridge to give them their custom brand and show other gamers what headphones they are using during gaming. Users can also see how the ear pods are attached to the top band and how large the cans actually are in comparison the rest of the unit.

The bridge is wrapped in plastic and very wide to help users deal with the headset’s large dimensions and overall shape. Users will also notice how the microphone is concealed into the left side of the headphones. This is a very cool way to hide a microphone and quite unique in this type of device.

Each ear pod has an open ear design that creates an enclosed sound experience that allows gamers to concentrate at the game at hand and not be bothered with background noise. This is critical to getting the best gaming experience possible and focusing on team strategy.

We flipped out the noise-canceling microphone from the left side of the headset and were able to extend the microphone about an inch longer to put it in the correct position to talk to our teammates online. The mic isn’t very flexible, but does seem to be sensitive enough to hear upclose sounds while canceling out the background sounds in our test environment.

Here’s another close-up of the right-side ear cup. There are little vents to keep your ears from getting sweaty and to keep in touch with the exterior surroundings. The size of these ear cups are pretty typical of circumaural headphones that entirely cover your ears.

Plantronics went out on a limb with the in-line volume and microphone controls with this headset. They added a swivel design for the volume control and a simple slider switch for muting the microphone. Very clean design.

The audio and microphone jacks are gold plate and easily identifiable by the symbol and color of each jack.

The Dolby USB connector is what gives this headset its 7.1 surround sound capabilities. It includes a simple on/off switch on the right side, mic/audio inputs on the bottom, and a large LED on the front panel that let’s you know the device is active.

The back panel of the Dolby USB connector conceals the USB connector and makes it easily for storage and portability. Everything also includes handy symbols to visually tell people what everything is on this headset.

I have used quite a few
I have used quite a few different gaming headsets but, the best resource I found to get an impartial view on them can be found at http://www.gamingheadsetreport.com, they are constantly adding new headset reviews.
