WME 9 64-bit and 7-Zip Results
Windows Media Encoder 9 64-BitVideo encoding and transcoding is a workload that is inherently parallel. The now ancient WME 9 is able to utilize as many cores as are available. A 250 MB 1080p file was converted to a 40 MB 480p WMV.
Clock speed is still important here, as the X4 970 beats out the X6 1070T. Extra cache helps out as well, but it is a balancing act between clockspeed, cores, and caches.
7-Zip
This zip program has a built in benchmark that shows performance when compressing and decompressing files. I chose a 32 MB definition file and varied the number of cores used per test.
Again more cores have a decided advantage over clockspeed in this particular test.
