Retail Packaging

WowWee Rovio Mobile Webcam Review - General Tech 53

The retail packaging for the Rovio is quite exceptional and includes a flashy studio photo of the mobile webcam. The unit comes in a large square box and focuses specially on the looks and features the Rovio will provide consumers.

The back panel also showcases more of the unit’s features and even includes a small screenshot of a family using the Rovio user interface to have a two-way conversation. Pretty snazzy.

The first thing you see when you open its retail packaging is a user manual, installation CD, and a small caution notice about installing the software properly. There are two large pieces of foam that secures all the devices that come with the Rovio.

Here is the foam enclosure out of the box and on our photography table. There are small cubby holes for each part that is shipped with Rovio.

After removing one of the pieces of foam, I was able to see exactly how this unit was packaged during shipping. The Rovio comes with the following components:

  • 1 x Rovio
  • 1 x Instruction manual
  • 1 x Quick Start Guide
  • 1 x Charging dock with built-in TrueTrack™ Beacon
  • 1 x Mast
  • 1 x 6 V 3000 mAh NiMH rechargeable battery pack
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x 8 V AC/DC adapter

Each portion of this devices was individually wrapped, sealed, and placed in its own compartment to ensure nothing got damaged during shipping. This is a great method for shipping multiple components in a single enclosure and should ensure a high rate of units arriving on a customer’s doorstep without any scratches, bumps, or scraps during shipping.

Included Extras

The Rovio comes with everything the device will need to function in one room or floor of your home. A couple items that are included are an AC adapter, USB cable, and a 6-volt 3000 mAh NiMH rechargeable battery pack.

WowWee also included a charging dock with features a built-in TrueTrack Beacon to help the Rovio return to the base station from anywhere in the room with a touch of a button.

To help the unit find its way back to the charging dock, the True Track Beacon shines two IR spots on the ceiling so the Rovio can pinpoint where the unit is and dock with the charging station via the TrueTrack Navigation system.

Here’s an upclose and personal look at the True Track Beacon that shines the laser light on the ceiling. It looks pretty cool and can be manually positioned to work in any room environment. Users will need to make sure the light is not obstructed by any objects during operation or the unit will have a hard time docking with the charging station.

The back of the charging station includes small vents behind the True Track Beacon and one plug to install an AC adapter. The dock is pretty straight forward, but we do applaud the design efforts and unique way to help the Rovio find its way back to the charging station.

This mast plugs into back of the charging dock to help the Rovio navigate to the station. It is pretty large, so ensure you place the charging station in an open area that doesn’t have an obstructed view of the ceiling.

The retail box also includes a detailed user manual and quick start guide. Pretty standard stuff.
