Conclusion, Pricing, and Final Thoughts

  • 3TB at an excellent cost/GB (see below).
  • Extremely weak driver support (by no fault of the drive itself).
  • Performance significantly hindered by current HBA workarounds.

Initial MSRP:
2.5 TB (model WD25EZRSDTL): $189 ($0.08/GB)
3.0 TB (model WD30EZRSDTL): $239 ($0.08/GB)

For Comparison (Newegg prices):

2.0 TB (model WD20EADS): $120 ($0.06/GB) (current price at Newegg)

If we see the typical price drop over MSRP, we can expect these new drives to fall neatly in line with the current 2TB pricing.

All Caviar Green series drives come with a standard 3 year warranty.

Final Thoughts:

While there are still significant technical hurdles to be overcome, someone has to take that first step in order to push progress along. Hopefully with the new drives out there we will see a quick turnaround on updated drivers and proper native support. Technical issues aside, I’m ecstatic to see such large capacity drives coming out at such a competitive price point.
