Introduction
The love of mechanical keyboards is a secret bond that most “normal” people can’t understand. Indeed, those who find the clickity-clack of mechanical keys to be as relaxing as a gentle spring rain seem to be a special breed of geek who is sometimes misunderstood even by fellow enthusiasts. As a result, some geeks have had to choose between the happiness of their fingertips and the happiness of their family or co-workers. In most cases, the later wins.

As a result, some geeks have had to choose between the happiness of their fingertips and the happiness of their family or co-workers. In most cases, the later wins.
But now there may be a solution – two, in fact. In this article we’ll take a look at the Steelseries 7G and the Das Keyboard Model S Professional. Both are mechanical keyboards, but both are built to make less noise than your normal mechanical unit.
If you were to simply read the marketing material for these keyboards you may find yourself wondering if they’re really comparable. The Steelseries 7G is sold as a gaming keyboard. Instead of focusing on the benefits of tactical feedback for every-day typing the company focuses on the alleged latency advantages. The Das Keyboard, on the other hand, is marketed almost exclusively to people who might sometimes label themselves “typists.”
Despite these superficial differences, the two keyboards are in fact very similar. Both keyboards have a softer sound than a normal mechanical keyboard. Both keyboards boast gold-plated connectors. Both keyboards have a USB hub built in. Both are made to stand up to many hours of abuse day after day. And both have a price tag of well over hundred dollars – $135 for the Das Keyboard Model S and $150 for the Steelseries 7G.
