TRIM:

TRIM and fragmentation over time performance was identical to that in our last SandForce Roundup

PROS:

  • Full blown SandForce SSD crammed into an incredibly small package.
CONS:
  • Cost – this is meant for enterprise use, and is priced accordingly.

The Viking SATADIMM - Enterprise SandForce punch packed into a DIMM! - Storage 32

Pricing:

SATADIMM is currently only available through Viking. They have been shipping to OEM’s for the past few months. Hopefully we can start seeing these in the usual channels at some point, but for now there is no consumer-level pricing available. I’ll update this space with any relevant pricing updates.

Final Thoughts:

Viking Modular Solutions has certainly broken the SSD mold with their SATADIMM product. While this is more of a niche product aimed at the enterprise, it’s refreshing to see such a bold innovation in SSD packaging. Taking power (and space) from free DIMM slots is certainly a novel idea, and is beneficial to overly cramped installations. I can easily see these being used for embedded and other custom systems where high storage performance is needed without the wasted space.

I’m giving the SATADIMM our Gold Award for coming up with a truly unique storage product.
