Media Encoding Tests

LAME 3.97a MT MP3 Encoder

This version of the LAME MP3 encoder is multi-threaded and takes advantage of two threads.

Intel Core i7-3820 Processor Review - Quad-Core Sandy Bridge-E under $300 - Processors 1

Our MP3 encoding test is only taking advantage of a couple threads and so all of the SNB and SNB-E parts perform very similarly.

Windows Media Encoder x64

WME is a great video encoding application that supports WMV9 HD codecs and more.

The i7-3820 has another good showing here by keeping up with the more expensive parts.

VirtualDub

VirtualDub is a great application for just about any kind of video conversion but in our testing we are using the DivX codec to shrink a collection of videos.

Intel Core i7-3820 Processor Review - Quad-Core Sandy Bridge-E under $300 - Processors 3

We continue to see the Core i7-3820 performing just a bit better than the Core i7-2600K as we more or less expected.

Handbrake

Known mainly for its DVD re-encoding prowess, our test uses the Handbrake command line interface.

Handbrake clearly shows the jump from going down to a quad-core processor compared to the 6-core processor in the Sandy Bridge-E family.  We still see a slight gain in performance on the 3820 compared to the Core i7-2600K though.

7-Zip Compression

I decided to replace the WinRAR test with a more repeatable and threaded application, 7-Zip.

Again the 2600K and the 3820 are running in a pretty close battle though the slightly higher clock speeds give the SNB-E the edge.
