Even though CES 2012 is behind us, there are still some things we took photos or video of that we wanted to show you. First up, Lucid had a suite off the strip to demonstrate a couple of new technologies coming from the company in 2012. VGWare is the current name for the cloud-based gaming technology based on the Lucid GPU virtualization technology that allows for games to be rendered on a server and played on a remote machine with only minimal hardware.
In the video above you see two integrated-GPU based notebooks playing Modern Warfare 2 (two instances) and Madagascar being rendered on a machine running an NVIDIA GTX 480 GPU.
Lucid intends to offer this technology to larger-scale companies that would want to compete with someone like OnLive or maybe even software developers directly. While that is what we expected, I told them that I would like to see a consumer version of this application – have a single high-powered gaming PC in your home and play games on multiple "thin client" PCs for LAN parties, etc. What do you all think – is that something you see as useful?
The second demo was for Lucid’s XLR8 software that promises to improve performance of gaming on PCs, phones and tablets by intelligently managing display synchronization and GPU performance.
The really interesting part about XLR8 is the flexibility it offers – in our video you see it running on an ASUS Transformer tablet via the NVIDIA Tegra 2 SoC. Frame rates jumped about 40% but we didn’t get enough hands on time with the configuration to truly make a decision on whether or not it was an improved gaming experience. Hopefully Lucid will get this technology to us soon for some hands-on time.

I have this annoying problem
I have this annoying problem with Lucid’s Virtu when playing Battlefield 3. Recent build Win 7 x64, 2500k, 8GB ram, GTX 560, Z68 mobo, HDMI to onboard output to hdtv. After a game or 2, Direct X would crash! Directx never crashes when plugged into the GTX card. This is disappointing, since I really like using the onboard gpu for non-gaming tasks. Would appreciate any suggestions. Directx is updated as well as Virtu but still crashes.
It lacks any point, because
It lacks any point, because to fully participate in lan a partie you need a screen (in this case tablet screen) and a keyboard (those that are designed with tablets in mind are quite few times more expensive than the usual ones), so the price combo is the same as a good laptop, but lacks performance, versatility, and autonomous graphics.
So no, there is no point at all in such a product or service.
A futile effort to jump on the cloud-gaming bandwagon, that’ll have a small market because of the still dismal availability of properly fast Wifi or internet.
Maybe in ten years it will change.
they appear to be running
they appear to be running this whole demo on a LAN as well…..which isn’t very real world.
The first demo of the “cloud”
The first demo of the “cloud” computing is very interesting. I completely agree with Ryan that this would be great for lan parties. Chances are the person hosting it is the one with all of the high end gear, but I’m sure you have friends who wouldn’t be able to run the game on their setup. This would allow a few people to share that one high end computer and give everyone the ability to play a game without need a gaming pc.
But only as long as the game
But only as long as the game isn’t something like a shooter.
Lucid said themselves that the delay is ONLY 2 frames. at 60 fps, 2 frames are 30 Miliseconds. You will notice the lag a lost.
I’ve been to a few LANs where
I’ve been to a few LANs where this would be awesome. The host has a Core i7 920 wound to 4GHz and a GTX580 and people come with their laptops with an Intel X4500MHD at best. Would make the experience much better for everyone.
hey guy how did the guy
hey guy how did the guy achive to play the game running on the server from other pc with the low spec i would like to do something like in my house what software would i need on the server please ?
You would use VGWare. This
You would use VGWare. This presentation is about VGWare.
And no, you can’t get it right now. It is still in development.
An alternative would be NVidia Geforce Grid. Google it. Also still in Development.
