Earlier rumors suggested that the LG Optimus 4X HD would be the first quad core Tegra 3 powered smartphone; however, HTC and NVIDIA made an announcement today that shows that LG is not the only company showing off a Tegra 3 smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2012!
NVIDIA announced in a press release today that their Tegra 3 mobile SoC would be powering the new HTC One X smartphone which is to be shown off at MWC 2012. According to HTC, the phone features 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of on-board storage to power the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) mobile OS on a 4.7" display with 1280×720 resolution. It further includes an 8 MP (megapixel) rear camera capable of 1080p video with stereo sound, a VGA resolution front camera for video conferencing and claimed 720p video, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, support for LTE 4G networks, and a 1,800 mAh battery.

BARCELONA, Spain—Feb. 26, 2012—NVIDIA today announced that its NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 mobile processor, the world’s only 4-PLUS-1™ quad-core processor, is powering the new HTC One™ X unveiled at Mobile World Congress. The smartphone represents the first collaboration between the two companies.
The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor features a unique 4-PLUS-1 quad-core architecture that delivers outstanding performance and exceptional battery life. It does this by progressively powering on each of its four main CPU cores as they’re needed for increasingly more demanding tasks, and relying on its fifth battery saver core for less demanding tasks and active standby mode. Tegra 3’s 12-core GPU enables consumers to enjoy console-quality gaming, as well as 1080p HD video capabilities unlike anything seen before on a smartphone.
“The HTC One X with Tegra 3 provides an experience that consumers will absolutely love,” said Kouji Kodera, Chief Product Officer at HTC. “We knew our next super phone had to be fantastic. That’s why we chose to work with NVIDIA.”
“HTC has quickly become one of the world’s most innovative makers of mobile devices,” said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. “The HTC One X exemplifies what we’ve come to expect from one of the world’s top phone makers.”

To further the news on this device… While the no LTE version will be powered by the Tegra III chip, the LTE capable variant will have a Dual Core Qualcomm S4 Karit CPU @ 1.5GHz (and will support all radio versions due to it being embedded in the chip – LTE, CDMA, GSM), and has almost the same performance as the Tegra 3 (and in some cases better..)
While this version of the SoC will be paired with the Adreno 225 GPU. Later this year (Q4), we will be expecting an updated variant of the device with the Adreno 305 GPU and possibly a quad core version of the S4 Karit chip. The dual core S4 paired with the Adreno 305 gpu prototype was already shown to outperform the Tegra III by quite a bit at times (however those benchmarks are just benchmarks, so a huge grain of salt must be taken with that)
The biggest dissapointment of the ONEx seems to be its non-removeable Li-Poly Battery (1800mAh) and, to a lesser extent, the lack of a micro-sd slot.
The camera, however, is probably the greatest point of interest with its 28mm dual shuttered sensor, that can take the best 8mpix images, at .07 seconds each to boot. It also has the ability to record in full 1080p and snap pictures at the same time. The camera also has itself a dedicated image processor to offset work from the S4/Tegra3.
