Rovio Entertainment purchases Futuremark Games Studio, but not all of Futuremark, for an undisclosed amount.
Rovio is known for making graphically lightweight yet intensely addictive games for about as many desktop and mobile platforms as they can get away with. Futuremark Games Studio is known for making beautiful PC games which are entertaining to some extent. Naturally they make a perfect couple.
So *that’s* how it got shattered!
Of course the real topic for discussion is why Rovio would want to purchase Futuremark Games Studio. One possible reason is that Rovio wishes to challenge Infinity Blade by Epic Games and capture the market of mobile eye-candy games. The other possibility would be that Rovio wishes to expand into making large budget games themselves.
In their purchase, Rovio has only acquired the studio but not any of their intellectual properties. Shattered Horizon and their other games remain property of the original parent company, Futuremark.
What do you speculate is just over the Shattered Horizon?
Rovio is primarily known for
Rovio is primarily known for rehashing thirty year old game concepts that only our moms can’t see through and are suckered into thinking is innovative and amazing. It’s really ashame that this company has made so much money off of a pretty version of Artillary ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artillery_game ).
It’s also unfortunate that Shattered Horizon wasn’t more of a hit, because it was kind of a blast to play.
Yeah I used to love playing
Yeah I used to love playing Scorched 3D and older 2D artillery games.
They must have acquired some
They must have acquired some intellectual property. Beyond that a software company is just talent and some hardware.
They wanted the employees.
They wanted the employees.
I find it HILARIOUS how
I find it HILARIOUS how morons that come into unexpected money spend it the same frivolous, stupid way whether they get it from a lottery, or some crazy selling indie game.
This purchase reeks of “I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing”, and the people that own Rovio should thank their lucky stars, try to milk the Angry Birds brand for all it’s worth, because they’ll never see commercial success again. Angry Birds was a one-off lottery win, just look at the ton of games they put forth before and since and none of them did more than barely pay the bills so the lights can stay on.
You can see the same “kid wins the lottery” behavior from other indie developers like Notch, whose success with minecraft led him to do all kind of stupid things. He shared a year’s profits among his employees, he’s funding some stupid game that no publisher wants to fund, and all in all is being an idiot with his money. Minecraft was also a one-off “holy crap I can’t believe that sold millions” type game, and Notch should be wise, realize he won the lottery and he needs to be careful with his money because he’s not winning it again and he has his whole life ahead of him.
