7-Zip Compression
I decided to replace the WinRAR test with a more repeatable and threaded application, 7-Zip.
For a single thread, again the IVB architecture takes the performance lead and is able to maintain a solid showing all the way through. At the full 8 thread count the 3770K is 13-14% faster than the 2600K.
TrueCrypt Encryption
TrueCrypt is one of the most popular pieces of software for disk encryption and it includes a handy benchmark mode to test the capabilities of your processor. Keep in mind that many modern CPUs include AES acceleration that is used throughout TrueCrypt.
Our first result is reporting on the initial AES result only and you can tell immediately which processors do NOT include AES acceleration. The new Core i7-3770K is able handle 3.7 GB/s of encryption and decryption falling behind only the Core i7-3960X at 5.7 GB/s. The second graph shows an average of the rest of the results where the new IVB CPU is able maintain a 19% performance lead over Sandy Bridge.
Now that HD4000 has arrived,
Now that HD4000 has arrived, can OpenCL be used to enhance the performance of the Ivy Bridge processor while simultaneously using a discrete graphics processor? If OpenCL can utilize GPU cycles for general purpose compute tasks then It should be able to utilize the Intel integrated GPU for more general purpose processing power in addition to the Ivy bridge’s other CPU cores, while the discrete GPU uses its resources for the graphics. OpenCL should see all the hardware on the computer as an available resource and It should be able to do this? If not then what is described as Heterogeneous computing has not completely arrived yet! Or is it just a matter of waiting for the software to catch up?
