PCPer File Copy Test

 

Our custom PCPer-FC test does some fairly simple file creation and copy routines in order to test the storage system for speed.  The script creates a set of files of varying sizes, times the creation process, then copies the same files to another partition on the same hard drive and times the copy process as well.  There are four file patterns that we used to try and find any strong or weak points in the hardware: 10 files @ 1000 MB each, 100 files @ 100 MB each, 500 files @ 10 MB each and 1000 files at 1 MB each.

File creation and copy was consistent across both firmware builds and performance was very good. A quick note that the copy test had to be repeated on 1.52 as the drive dropped out mid-test. Remember, this is alpha firmware, so there will be some bumps in the road. Fortunately this was the only dropout.

Readers should pay particular attention to the file copy test. Later in this article we will cover some discrepancies with sequential read performance. Sequential reads are half of the file copy test, so the above testing is proof that while the benches may show some oddities in this respect, practical real-world bulk file reading should be comparable to and competitive with other 6Gb/sec SSDs.
