News suggests April 23rd is the new release date for ivy bridge. I assume you have had ivy bridge there in the office, but have been unable to talk about it yet, does this mean we will be getting coverage of Ivy bridge sooner than anticipated?
Ryan, please cover the z77 sabertooth motherboard from ASUS asap. Also cover availability of 680 cards, I am holding off upgrading until Ivy bridge release and your coverage of it. I am hoping to be able to order my new system from newegg on april 23rd. I am really interested in the performance gains for gaming with the Virtue MVP option enabled in conjunction with the 680.
P.S
Allyn, I plan on using z77’s SRT tech with a WD 1.5 TB black. Do you have a suggestion for which SSD to use, given its 64gb limit.
Josh/Jeremy: What do you two recommend for a good scotch whiskey?
Jeremy would be the one best
Jeremy would be the one best suited to answer that. I primarily stick with beer. Though for a good single malt scotch… Laphroig is really good. If you like a strong oak/peat flavor.
I’m with Josh on Laphroaig
I’m with Josh on Laphroaig and other Islays as I prefer strong phenols to bring peat and smoke to the scotch. The honest answer is that there are almost no bad scotches, you just have to keep drinking different ones until you discover your favourites. I tend to Islays and Speysides, it could be that you prefer the heather overtones more common to the Highlands or maybe a Lowland.
Littlemill 25 is one of the bad ones, it’s like a baby drank Hi5 and then puked it back up into your glass
haha, thanks for the
haha, thanks for the recommendations!

Speyburn is really good as well. Not as peaty as the Islays, but very smooth.

A quick note as to your
A quick note as to your piracy discussion.
I recently switched jobs and i worked for a retail company who had some pretty strict anti-theft measures. I would have to lock up razor blade refills so you could not get them off the shelf without getting a sales associate to unlock it for you. I took the sales data of razor refills over the last several months, and noted it down. Then i went against company policy and removed the locks from these razor blade refills. I then watched the sales figures of the blades, and they went up something along the lines of 427%. Once people no longer had that barrier to buy the blades, the sales shot up drastically. I also logged the theft of these blades. Each week I would do a cycle count of what inventory said we had, and what we actually had. Ifound that by removing the locks, the theft went up…but only by 15% or so, if i remember correctly.
So by removing the anti-theft mechanism, preventing legitimate customers from buying razor blade cartridges, sales on them went drastically up, while theft only went up 15% or so.
However upon reporting this to corporate, they only focused on the theft and not on the sales increases. Corporations are too fixated on potential lost sales due to theft, and not enough on lost sales due to anti-theft.
The same thing applies to video games. I was extremely interested in bullet storm, but when the time came to buy it, i read reviews and changed my mind. God forbid we accept blame of lost sales due to a bad/mediocre game, and instead throw it to the piracy wolves. Scapegoats are a powerful drug it seems.
Well in that specific case
Well in that specific case you’d need to adjust for cost. 10% profit margins means you’d need to have ~9 sales (depending on how you calculate percent profit) to each theft to not have a net loss.
But you have the right idea at least: the one measurement doesn’t affect the other — they both are derived from factors which affect both — but they don’t affect each other.
Thus do not assume anything about one measurement by blindly looking at the other.
If i remember right the
If i remember right the markup they have on them was around 30-40% So while it is true one loss takes several sales to recoup, there are other factors to look at as well. Would the thieves have paid for them if they were locked up? What about repeat customers coming back to buy razor blades from you because they don’t have the hassle of finding someone to unlock one for them. Also, whats to prevent a shoplifter from asking that you unlock them, then steal them afterward.
In any case the analogy to video game piracy is getting thin when you stretch it that far. Though I do think there is something to be said about repeat business for a hassle free experience when it comes to games.
As to origin vs steam, I do have a couple games on origin but i avoid it like the plague. Its not that I’ve had a bad experience with it, its more along the lines of what Allyn said. I prefer to only run one client to accomplish a task, rather than redundancies. I own far far more games on steam, so I will always buy from them first. Also Valve has not given me a reason to distrust them where EA has several times.
sigh, figures they would only
sigh, figures they would only focus on “lost sales” bullshit and punish the legitimate customers. Hello, they are criminals, they aren’t going to buy them no matter what barriers you use so incentivize the people who will actually want to spend money 😛
That would be entirely too logical though, so that’ll never happen.

I don’t have any problems
I don’t have any problems with Origin as far as major bugs go, it’s more inconveniences/annoyances.
For example you can’t join a friends BF3 game through Origin, you have to first go to the battlelog (which is buggy) in your web browser.
There’s no backup feature (like Steam has) for easily transferring your games to another machine or re-installing your OS.
For a long time you couldn’t remove BETA/DEMOs from your Origin games list, even though those demos/betas had expired. They finally allow you to do this in a recent update though.
Then there’s the fact that Origin is essentially spyware, and tracks everything you have installed on your PC. I personally don’t really mind this one, but a lot of people understandably have a problem with this.
I’m with Allyn on Origin. It
I’m with Allyn on Origin. It tries to do what steam does – but with only EA titles. It’s an inconvenience to have to run this whole other program that, while it doesn’t necessarily have issues, isn’t as good of an experience as with Steam. I really hope game don’t take this route where each publisher is going to require its own digital distribution program.
Actually EA wants other
Actually EA wants other publishers on Origin as well.
Because *why not* get a cut of other people’s sales?
N.B. for your thermite
N.B. for your thermite experiment, only very specific fire extinguishers will work on a combustible metals (Class D) fire. The dry powder (ABE) one you used is only for combustible solids (A), combustible liquids (B) and electrical fires (E). Science is fun, but be careful.
