Paul Thurrott reports that Microsoft will dump Aero Glass in lieu of a more flat user interface for Windows 8. How far is Microsoft willing to distance itself from the desktop market to entice a foothold in the mobile space?
Remember that image I did with a turd on a desktop workstation a few days ago?
Microsoft has killed their glass-based design which they established almost a decade ago with the Longhorn technical preview.
Windows 8 Release Preview is set to release within the next two weeks and will contain Aero Glass as its desktop chrome. The shift to the flat layout will occur before release of the full version. It is still unclear whether users will be able to see it hands-on before they are expected to own it.
The ironic part is that is probably a glass aquarium.
You may be wondering why I claim this as an offense against the desktop. Later in his article Paul gives his prediction into why Aero Glass shattered — since Microsoft did not directly say so themselves. Aero is not the most difficult interface for a computer to render but it does require a steady amount more computation than a flat layout. Transparency, blur, and other effects take up computation power — hence why Windows harasses you to turn off Aero if your framerate dips in a game — and that computation power translates to battery life.
Remember when Aero was touted as a driving reason to in-place upgrade to Vista Home Premium?
I guess Microsoft believes that they do not want their tablet customers to feel like second-rate citizens. At least we know that they will be willing to throw it all away and do it over yet again. At this point that should be the most clear above anything else.
They are removing aero now?
They are removing aero now? And there excuse for removing it is to improve battery life? I highly dough aero puts that much stress on a system. Especially since the average laptop has a dual/quad core CPU.
Actually they don’t really
Actually they don’t really say exactly why it is gone.
The battery life expectation is Paul Thurrott’s… and I think it seems plausible too.
By Microsoft’s own admission
By Microsoft’s own admission in the Windows Vista Developer Blog back when Aero was introduced, it takes about 1-4% on battery life.

Oh come on MS, they just keep
Oh come on MS, they just keep making it more and more crappy for desktop users. grrrr.
I really do not see a reason
I really do not see a reason to upgrade. Metro interface, paid extra for Media centre, Aero gone… Seem like a down grade to me.
Honestly, aero looked best on
Honestly, aero looked best on Vista, with 7 aero got a bit cartoony and in Windows 8, aero was just looking unappealing.
The metroised UI in explorer looks cleaner and nicer but it really isn’t “eliminating the chrome” just painting it another colour.
The real key to eliminating chrome is to eliminate UI elements.
BUT, they added more UI elements with the ribbionised explorer, you essentially traded extreme customize-ability for a little less real estate which is fine by me. I’m loving the new ribbons on explorer.
Overall, a metro UI in Win32 would look beautiful, however, its still a hodgepodge of elements with the Aero taskbar from Win 7 remaining it looks out of place and the maximise, minimise and exit buttons should have been round.
They did mention that they couldnt change everything due to an attempt to minimise breaking functionality with older applications. Still though, the taskbar is a main one.
The Icon artstyle is also iffy. But better leave that for Windows 9 considering deadlines and all. Honestly, it seems they decided to metroise Aero a little late in the game, and it should have been part of the Win 8 from day one.
Thanks Microsoft for making
Thanks Microsoft for making the worst version of Windows in history.
There are more things that suck with it then are good about it. Not going to be an upgrade for me.
Performance aside, and only
Performance aside, and only considering looks I actually prefer Vista and XP to Windows 8 (with Win 7 being my favorite) ;).
tablets are 2nd rate
tablets are 2nd rate computers…. lets stop sugar coating it.
