While perusing through the listings and descriptions of sessions and presentations for the upcoming AMD Fusion Developer Summit, I came across an interesting one that surprised me. Tomorrow, June 11th, at 5:15pm PST, you can stop by the Grand Hyatt in Bellevue to learn about the upcoming AMD Wireless Display technology.
AWD (AMD Wireless Display) is a multiple-platform application family to enable wireless display technologies much in the same way that Intel has been pushing with WiDi. While Intel’s take on it requires very specific Intel wireless controllers and is only recently, with the release of Ivy Bridge, getting the full-steam push from Intel, AMD’s take on it is quite different.
Intel introduced WiDi in 2010
According to the brief on this AFDS session, AMD wants to create an API and SDKs for application developers to integrate AWD into software and to leverage the WiFi Alliance for an open-standards compliant front-end. Using AMD APUs, the goal is provide lower latency for encoded video and audio while still using the required MPEG2TS wrapper. We are also likely to learn that AMD hopes to make AWD open to a wider array of wireless devices.
AMD often takes this "open" approach to new technologies with mixed results – CUDA has been in place for many years while the adoption of OpenCL is only starting to take hold and 3D Vision still is the standard for 3D gaming on the PC.
After having quite a few chances to use Intel’s Wireless Display (WiDi) technology myself I can definitely say that the wireless approach is the one I am most excited with and that has the most potential to revolutionize the way we work with displays and computing devices. I am eager to see what partners AMD has been working with and what demonstrations they will have for AWD next week.
This is an absolutely
This is an absolutely terrible idea. There already exist three such protocols! AirPlay, WiDi, and Miracast (formerly known as WiFi Direct Display). Even Intel plans on supporting Miracast as well as WiDi for their processors with QuickSync.
Come on AMD! Just go with Miracast. That would pretty much make it just the Apple proprietary AirPlay, and everybody else on Miracast.
I love how it is a story
I love how it is a story about an AMD product and you made the blatant ad for widi and intel products. Very classy.
Are you fucking kidding me
Are you fucking kidding me man? Please, give me a break.
We took a picture from one of our PREVIOUS WIDI stories to put in this piece for comparison sake.
Do you know why used the Intel image rather than the AMD one?
BECAUSE THERE IS NO AMD IMAGE BECAUSE THEY HAVEN’T ANNOUNCED OR DISCUSSED ANYTHING.
Obviously Ryan is pissed, my
Obviously Ryan is pissed, my apologies. I think what i said got taken out of context. i wasn’t trying to say the site or ryan is biased, just that it wasn’t a good decision to use that image. Maybe just using the logo of the company would be appropriate for arties where there isnt N official ad image. or have one from each.
It is kind of hard to take:

… out of context.
You seem to feel as though we were biased, in this case, pro-Intel — though that is completely untrue. We try to report the news as honestly as we can which is why we tend to get offended when we are effectively called shills — particularly when we deal with actual astroturfers fairly often. It can be quite upsetting to be accused of that.
You do not need to agree with our articles, opinions, or methods — but they are ours.
Ryan believed that the image and title was relevant to the context of the story. Intel did not influence his stance. AMD did not influence his stance. You did not influence his stance.
I hope you will continue to trust our integrity in the future.
it´s beyond me why then is
it´s beyond me why then is urge to put some pics, if company has not provided any
I am very surprised by your
I am very surprised by your language ! I thought that you represent more than a “dirty language user”. Is there no other way to explain yourself? How your site would look if everyone would use such a language?
2nd comment. We can tell you
2nd comment. We can tell you looked at the picture and the title but it does not seem you read rest of what was written. Maybe you have some kind of learning disorder that keeps you from understanding. Why write a negative comment if it is an not at least an educated one? Have a fantastic day.
Thank you to the person who
Thank you to the person who understands things.
No i dont have a disorder,
No i dont have a disorder, maybe i just said it wrong and it wqs taken out of context? I don’t know, didn’t mean to causr such a stir, but it does happen. But yes, i undrstood and read the article, i know it wasnt a review, and i know it was just announcing amd is ding something to try and compete.
When something like this happens in the comments, it really detracts from the story itself, like i said… my apologies.
Please excuse my previously
Please excuse my previously bad misspelling but whiners like that are really annoying.
nabokovfan87 said very well.
nabokovfan87 said very well. I think that the “biggest” part of reviewing sites like Anadtech and PCperspective (no offense) and much more are bought by intel and nvidia, and they “have” to support those “tyrants” in any way -> expect biased reviews based on money and not on the true quality of a “product”.
So nabokovfan87 cut to the core and said what majority knows but nobody says.
By the way people like you are really annoying.
Thanks for the industry
Thanks for the industry insight, andrei. I’m sure your vast years of experience really get to the heart of the matter.
Come on, do you really expect
Come on, do you really expect a piece about a new technology to not compare to existing ones?
Most tech sites offer pretty balanced views, and I’ve seen nothing here that I see as taking sides.
Guys look again, the title is
Guys look again, the title is about amd but the article has a picture of an Intel advertisement, so idk what is balanced about such a review fail
Hey, you: please see my note
Hey, you: please see my note above to “nabokovfan”.
Ditto.

It’s not a blatant
It’s not a blatant advert/promotion for Intel’s WiDi, it is simple that a picture can more easily _and_ quickly explain what is being talked about, instead of having to type a whole nother paragraph just to effectively describe it.
Bottom line is the picture works easier for both poster and reader. Had Ryan been writing about an actual Press Release, then there would’ve been pictures he could’ve provided for us, yet it was only a Summit event announcement by AMD. No pictures, limited info, just to get people who are attending the Summit interested enough to go to this specific event.
However, I won’t deny the fact that *perhaps* the image could’ve been cropped to remove the info about which processors have it and how people can attain this tech right now. So cropped up below the TV may have been a more neutral-appearing approach. 😛 Despite what has happened, Ryan isn’t guilty of any wrong doing;thus, not deserving of any of the flak you’re giving him.
It’s not easy to be a news poster (or reviewer), quickly getting people information and still not appear biased in the process, so don’t read too far into some things! heh
Except this is /not/ a review
Except this is /not/ a review 😛
I concur with what Scott and Formula350 have stated.
ryan just let it go, don’t
ryan just let it go, don’t fuel trolls the best thing you can do is say nothing.
Great article about Intel’s
Great article about Intel’s WiDi technology!

I just bought a DEll Lapto
I just bought a DEll Lapto with AMD A10 Quad Core Processor with Windows 8. Bought it through QVC . In their presentation they connect the laprtop wierelessly to the TV. It seems simple. But they were connecting to a Smart TV.
The said you need an adapter for the TV . I’m trying to find which one is the adapter??????.
But I saw it connecting several times to the TV without wiring. Will inform when I receive the laptop.
Interesting article and a
Interesting article and a good example of how a company should not do business.
I just finished a custom build AMD pc with high spec very expensive radeon graphics card, I spent thousands of GBP on this set up and I am AMAZED to discover I cannot miracast or use amd’s wireless display.
I will never bother with AMD ever again, my cheap Chinese android phone can broadcast the screen to my TV but my very expensive AMD pc cannot.
WHAT A WASTE, FFS AMD just support miracast.
IDIOTS.
