Wireless Performance – Torture Test

You wouldn’t believe the strange looks the wife gave me when she found me standing in the Laundry room with a laptop.  As for the results of the testing, as you would expect, Wi-Fi connectivity took a nose dive and in some cases I couldn’t even get a connection between the adapters and routers.  The tests definitely took longer than normal to run even when they did connect and I had flashbacks to my 300 baud modem days.

So, first up, we tried to fire up the 5 Ghz spectrum.

First thing you’ll notice is the N/A’s on the charts.  I just couldn’t get the Intel Centrino to connect at 5 Ghz on the Airport at all.  All the ASUS adapters were able to connect, but the upload/download speeds were pretty poor.  On the flip side, the ASUS USB-N66 was able to connect both at standard and high power and pulled half way decent speeds.  Granted, they didn’t come close to what we were getting in the other locations, but the fact that not only did the USB-N66 connect in that room, but pulled pretty good numbers goes to prove that ASUS did something right with their spaceship shaped antenna.

2.4 Ghz spectrums are generally better at penetrating walls and floors compared to the 5 Ghz spectrum so I was expecting to see better connections when compared to the 5 Ghz tests above.  Neither the Intel Centrino or ASUS USB-N53 could actually connect to the Apple Airport on 2.4 Ghz.  The USB-N66 was able to connect at both Standard and High power settings, but I found that the speeds were lower than the tests at 5 Ghz.  So, let’s see how we do with the ASUS RT-N66U router.

Yeah, you’re not seeing things.  Every adapter failed to connect to the ASUS RT-N66U router on the 5 Ghz spectrum.

After seeing the results of the connectivity tests at 5 Ghz, I didn’t have high hopes for the 2.4 Ghz connections.  Boy was I wrong.  Every adapter was able to connect without any issues and while the speeds weren’t all that great in some cases, the USB-N66 shined as usual.   The Intel Centrino actually beat out the USB N-53 in all the download tests and one of the upload tests.

Needless to say, the torture tests put a hurting on everyone involved, but there were some pleasant surprises as well.
