ASUS RT-N66U Firmware and Software – Part 1

When it comes to included software and router firmware, ASUS has done a great job of making a clean and simple to use UI that still has powerful capabilities under the hood for those interested in taking advantage of them.  The first time I opened up the GUI I was blown away with how nice and streamlined it looks compared to the same old minimalist router interface we’ve gotten used to for all these years.

Though to start things off, I made sure to update to the latest available firmware (3.0.0.4.220 as of this writing.)  The first time you fire up a browser once you’re connected to the RT-N66U you are greeted with a simple to use GUI that walk you through setting up your router password and configuring your Internet connection and Wi-Fi settings.

Once you’ve completed the setup screens you’re dropped into a nice looking status screen from where you can easily get to most tasks.   From the landing page it’s a simple matter of drilling down to see what clients are connected, your Wi-Fi settings or even what is attached to your USB ports.

Along the left side of the GUI you have access to various subpages that lets you dive down into further settings.  You can set up to 6 additional Wi-Fi networks (3 x 2.4 GHz & 3 x 5 GHz) for ‘guest’ access and lock down things such as how many hours a connection can stay connected to the network or whether or not they can access the local Intranet.

Through the Traffic Manager series of pages you have access to Quality of Service (QoS) that allows you to prioritize various types of traffic as well as traffic monitoring.  Traffic can be monitored by connection (All, Wired, 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and by time frame (Real Time, Hourly, Daily).

Parental controls are available to lock down access hours by client/MAC address.

The RT-N66U comes chock full of applications and services that can take advantage of the two USB ports on the back of the router.
