ASUS RT-N66U Firmware and Software – Part 2

ASUS has created a service called “AiDisk” that uses FTP and allows you to connect a USB storage device to the router and simply share files either locally to clients on your internal network, or to clients out on the internet.  It’s a simple matter of picking whether you want to give folks open access or set up some access controls by ID/password, creating a Dynamic DNS name.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to create an external ASUS DDNS name to test to connectivity remotely.  Not sure if it was a problem with my setup, or the ASUS DDNS servers were having issues at the time of testing.  Internally I was able to access the files on the USB storage device without a hitch though.

Other services/settings available with USB attached devices through the router include attaching a USB printer and have the RT-N66U act as a networked printer server or even hooking up a USB 3G/4G USB modem and it can act as a ‘backup connection’ for your Internet access should your main internet connection on the WAN port go down.

ASUS has also included another service called “AiCloud”.  From their website,

“ASUS AiCloud is a smart and easy mobile application that brings your ASUS cloud experience to iOS and Android.   Access, stream, sync, and share all your files on the go from both public and private cloud storage services.”

Simply put, you can easily access, stream and synchronize content from USB attached storage, ASUS’ cloud based WebStorage or amongst devices on your network with each other through the router.  I was able to connect my Android smartphone to the RT-N66U over Wi-Fi and easily browse and display/play files that were on USB attached storage.

Additional features include 802.11 a/b/g/n 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz Wi-Fi networking with multiple versions of WEP, WPA & WPA2 encryption, firewall/access controls, denial of service protection, service and port filtering, multiple VPN support, DLNA server functionality, DDNS management, and more.

If you’d like to poke around and see what the Firmware/GUI looks like yourself, ASUS has set up a site that shows a dummy UI of the N66U firmware in action.
