Wired Performance – ASUS RT-N66U and Apple Airport Extreme

To give us a true baseline for wired performance, I ran a set of tests using a CAT6 crossover cable hooked up directly to the network cards in the LAN and WAN box.  This should give us the best performance we can get out of the test bed boxes and give us a target for all the other wired tests to be measured against.  For the wired tests we’ll compare the direct crossover cable results against data from tests run through both the Apple Airport Extreme and the ASUS RT-N66U routers.

Directly connecting the boxes with a crossover cable showed us we could maintain a maximum of 36,806 sessions between the two boxes before they started dropping.  Hooking the boxes up through both the Apple Airport Extreme and the ASUS  RT-N66U got the exact same results.

Ping testing showed basically zero difference between the crossover cable connection and the wired connections through the two routers.  The only test that showed any difference was the maximum ping time with 0 ms for direct connect, 0.6 ms for the Apple Airport and 1.2 ms for the ASUS RT-N66U, but they’d be for all intents and purposes unnoticeable to an end user.

Most of us spend a lot more time downloading than uploading.  The ASUS RT-N66U is neck and neck with the crossover cable tests, only 1.1% slower in Average downloads at 734.5 Mbps.  Strangely, the test results actually showed the the ASUS with a slight edge in Maximum download speed compared to the crossover cable.  Granted, it was only 2.4 Mbps (.3%) faster, but it’s still good to see.  Once again, the Apple Aiport Extreme fell behind both the crossover cable and the ASUS RT-N66U by a healthy margin of up to 28% in some tests.

With the upload speeds we see some differentiation between the direct connection upload speeds and the speeds seen through the router.  The Crossover cable tests of course were the fastest.  The ASUS RT-N66U held it’s own though and only fell a few Mbps behind the direct crossover cable connection in both Average and Maximum Upload speeds.  Minimum speeds on the ASUS were about 20% less than the direct connection speeds, but in all cases the ASUS beat out the Apple Airport Extreme in upload speeds.
