A recently leaked slide reveals one of Intel’s upcoming Xeon-branded server chips coming in Q3 2013. The Xeon E5-2600 V2 is an Ivy Bridge-EP processor and will be compatible with motherboards featuring the LGA 2011 socket.
The Xeon E5-2600 V2 in particular has a 70W TDP (thermal design power) rating while the highest-end Ivy Bridge-EP CPUs will have TDPs of up to 130W. The E5-2600 V2 has 10 physical cores, and with HyperThreading it can handle a maximum of 20 threads. Each physical core has access to 256KB L2 cache and the chip has a total of 30MB L3 cache. Further, this (and other) Ivy Bridge-EP processor will support up to 1866MHz DDR3 system RAM.
Interestingly, the Xeon E5-2600 V2 is merely the middle of the road part for Intel. The company will be releasing processors that are even higher-end than this one. They will have up to 12 physical cores which means up to 24 threads. And paired with Intel's 22nm manufacturing process and 3D transistors, these chips will fit right into workstations and server rooms.

Good post cause I think what is gonna happen is you will see people opting to grab a Xeon rather then a regular part due to the performance ceiling we’ve hit. Of course cost is prohibitive in a lot of situations due to the Xeon being a high margin product but I think the lure of 12 cores is tempting even if I will NEVER use all of them till the day I die. Performance via overclocking is losing its luster because of a ceiling we’ve hit, next logical thought is more cores….aka Xeon. I would appreciate a response from the PCper guys on what they think of this train of thought.

So I see we’ve come from the Xeons models having 50% more core than the highest end consumer part to having 300% more cores. It’s really a shame AMD has been struggling or else we’d see a lot more compelling consumer grade parts from Intel.

I think this is great, looks like Intel has really gotten thier 22nm IvyBridge E/EP design/refinements down really well.
I think its safe to say that when we get the Ivy Bridge-E refresh in the desktop space, that we could see 8 or maybe even 10 core desktop versions, and likely 6 cores being priced at the current 4 core Sandy Bridge-E prices.

I have been a huge fan of AMD
I have been a huge fan of AMD since they started. It’s sad to think that this might be the end for them. I have built many computers using their processors. My current one probably the last. Their Idea of using the same socket for such a wide range of of processors made it possible for me to start with a cheaper dual core and upgrade to an overclock-able quad core when I had more money.
I think Intel should take notes on the positives that made AMD so damn popular and try to aspire to offer more affordable high speed options. I fear though that without a direct competitor it’s only going to get more expensive.
That said I am impressed that they made a 10 core and are planning a 12. Good for them that they are still innovating.

Two Xeon E5 12 cores procs OC @ 4+ ghz on water cooling installed on an EVGA SR-X mobo with 64 Gigabyte of 2ghz+ mhz Ram speed with 2 x 512GB Corsair Neutron SSDs with two Gefore 690 OC video card on SLI?..
