Samsung is the latest company to announce its fleet of dock-able tablet computers running the full version of Windows 8. Launched under the ATIV Smart PC brand, the company is offering up two models depending on the amount of computing horsepower you need to get work done. Specifically, Samsung is launching the Series 5 ATIV Smart PC 500T and the Series 7 ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T. Both models will be available for purchase on October 26th for $749.99 and $1,199.99 respectively.
Samsung Series 5 Slate: ATIV Smart PC 500T
The Samsung Series 5, also known as the ATIV Smart PC 500T is a 11.6” tablet powered by Intel’s recently released Clover Trail-based Atom processor platform. It measures 11.6” x 7.2” x 0.38” and weighs 1.65 pounds. The tablet features a LED-backlit touchscreen display with a resolution of 1366×768. A 2.0 megapixel camera and dual 0.8W speakers are also included. The tablet itself can further be paired with a keyboard dock that has a full qwerty keyboard and touchpad.
Internal specifications include an Intel Atom Z2760 processor (running at 1.5 GHz and featuring dual cores with 256 KB each), 2GB of DDR2L memory, and a 64 GB solid state drive. Radios and networking gear includes 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0. [The specifications sheet further claims Gigabit LAN support but there does not appear to be any Ethernet jacks on the tablet so I’m assuming it’s solely marketing to say that it supports connecting to a Gigabit LAN (over Wi-Fi)…] The 500T is powered by a two cell, 30 watt-hour lithium-polymer battery.
The external IO ports include a micro HDMI port, one USB 2.0 port, a combination headphone/mic jack, a microSD card slot, and a docking connector.
The Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T will come pre-loaded with the 32-bit version of Windows 8. The tablet itself is $649.99 and with the keyboard dock, it will be $749.99.
Samsung Series 7: ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T
If you need more computing power, Samsung is offering up its newest Series 7 slate, the ATIV 700T. This tablet is slightly thicker than the 500T at 11.6” x 7.2” x 0.5”. It is also a bit heavier at 1.89 pounds versus 1.65 pounds with the 500T. That tradeoff in size nets you significantly better hardware, however. It features a LED-backlit touchscreen with a resolution of 1920×1080. It further includes the same 1.6W (2 x 0.8W) stereo speakers, but adds a second 8MP rear camera in addition to the 2MP front facing webcam.
Internally, the 700T is packing an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5-3317U processor. This chip is a dual core part with HyperThreading for a total of four threads along with 3 MB of L3 cache. The 700T features 4 GB of DDR3 at 1600MHz and a 128GB solid state drive. Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi also comes standard. The 700T also has a larger 4 cell Li-Po battery (rated at 49 Wh) to power the faster Intel processor.
External IO includes one micro HDMI, one USB 3.0, a combination headphone/mic jack, docking connector, and a micro SD card slot.
The Series 7 ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T comes bundled with a dock as standard and it has a starting price of $1,199.99. It will come pre-loaded with the 64-bit version of Windows 8.

For that price, Why not just
For that price, Why not just but a standard laptop with a significantly faster CPU, more RAM and more storage, then use the left over money to buy an ARM based android tablet (and in the future if they make a ARM version of windows *, then the cyanogenmod team or some other group will port it over to lower cost tablets.
Some people want the power in
Some people want the power in the form of a tablet. My father (he upgrades his personal tablet and wants to get something better than an iPad as he didn’t like Androids capabilities and Apple hates anything not under it’s control) is planning on getting the ATIVE 700T but might choose a competitor if the keyboard doesn’t have a battery inside of it. Not a given though.
Also, at this price range, it immediately uses the same parts as an Ultrabook but in a much more portable form-factor. To get an Ultrabook with more power, you’ll be shelling out 100-500 more USD for a bigger screen (not what’s really wanted by him) and a graphics card to operate it. This also increases the power draw and can have a detrimental effect on the efficieny of the model.
Maybe because the people who
Maybe because the people who are wanting to purchase such a product are actual artists who would like the portability of a notebook computer and need the added functionality of the digitizer screen (not necessarily touchscreen, but digitizer!) owing to the type of work they do.
I, for one, would like to NOT have to pack another bulky graphics tablet (think of a Wacom graphics tablet like an Intuos) with my notebook every single time I cart my work around.
A full-fledged notebook or whatever other machine plus a something else wouldn’t work well for someone like me; why carry multiple devices when one will do nicely? Granted, yes, the tablet PC perhaps may not quite have as much power, but also, the Android device you mentioned can’t do what a digital artist needs it to do, either, and a full-fledged graphics tablet (again, like an Intuos) is a bit bulky and needs to be connected via wiring.
Not directly addressing your question and thoughts, but addressing some thoughts out loud in general:
To give a little history, ‘Tablet PCs’ existed before Apple ever came out with their iPad which isn’t even a true tablet (in my opinion) when compared to what the older ‘tablet PCs’ were which were lesser powered but mostly full-featured notebooks but with a digitizer screen option, stylus, and accommodated keyboard option.
The older Tablet PCs were most often bought and used by people who needed the portable digitizer option on the screen so that they had a portable version of what a Wacom Cintiq can do.
Architects, graphic designers, artists of all stripes, people who liked to sketch or draw in addition to type, people who liked to demonstrate their ideas on the fly, etc, had the chance to do and show their work and in a portable manner without having to deal with a not-very-portable desktop solution or a notebook + graphics tablet solution.
Apple’s iPad and all the other similar products that appeared are no replacement for a true Tablet PC; just ask anyone who has ever used a Tablet PC to its fullest.
In the same way, I agree that a Tablet PC may not be a full replacement for a desktop solution or a high-powered gaming-centric notebook solution.
The money I might drop into a Tablet PC would partially go into the Wacom-geared digitizer screen – something that neither desktops (save for Cintiq) or normal notebooks have – because I am an artist and need the on-screen Wacom digitizer so I don’t have to carry around multiple devices to do one job.
I think there IS a an
I think there IS a an android tablet that match your needs and it offers more functionality that cannot be done using this tablet at a very lower cost.
(Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 ) is a the latest Samsung android tablet that have a an s-pen which is pressure sensitive and have abut 80 pressure level or something like that
it is very powerful and have feature of multitasking which can run many applications on the same screen
I recommend you take a look at it for full specs
this have a version of 3G so you can even use it for phones so you will not carry a smartphone ether .
sorry for any thing I am wrong about, I just liked to give this advice , and don’t have any other purpose.
The Note tablet cannot run
The Note tablet cannot run full window programs such as Photoshop and/or most other graphic design programs that have been optimized for windows OS. The apps in the play store are jokes compared with the full functionality of a native windows program. This is just one of the examples that can be given as to why Windows 8 tablets [Not RT] will become so popular and people who want the true capabilities of a laptop in a portable media friendly device will pay the premium price to get Windows tablet convertibles. I myself would have paid for the RT surface if they would have included an active digitizer in it. I am now most likely going to go for either the 500t/700t or the surface pro depending on my patience in waiting for the Pro’s release and based upon it’s pricing. My speculation is that the Surface Pro will go for 899 for the 64g and 999 for the 128g without keyboard covers. Of course based upon the 700t’s pricing that may be a little low but you also have to take into consideration the $65 licensing fee that windows has charged them as well as the fact that Windows (I believe) is going to try to be competitive against the other companies high end tablet hybrids in regards to their pricing. I also believe that this was there reason for first releasing the RT and not releasing pricing information on the Pro in order to see the price points set by other companies and if people in fact purchase them for that price.
Why not consider the Series 7
Why not consider the Series 7 running Windows running Windows 8?
What is the difference
What is the difference between this and the Samsung Series 7 Slate, which also has a i5 but runs on Windows 7.
I am a business user and need a machine with enough power to run MS Office but still being a tablet. I only need one computer not two (laptop and ipad) like most people seem to be happy with.
The main differences
The main differences are:
128GB storage (Win7 version has 64GB)
1920×1080 display (Win7 version is 1366×768)
better touch display
I love the concept of the
I love the concept of the ATIV 700T…was ready to buy several times. But… I run workshops in hotels and want to have the versatility to project using all the hotels multimedia projectors…must of which still have RGB connectors. I went and bought one USB…RGB changer connector….but it only works with windows 7.
Where I can get something that will allow me to use this tablet with RGB multimedia projectors…at least until the hotels catch up with the new age projection era.
An in between solution might
An in between solution might be Lenovos 13″ Yoga which runs Windows 8 Pro. In the ultrabook class, 13 inches is large enough and fast enough for everyday computing tasks, but when folded up, the Yoga can be used as a Windows tablet. Only one device to lug around.
For starters, the Yoga
For starters, the Yoga doesn’t have a wacom active digitizer, you’re stuck with a shitty capacitive stylus.
is there sth like yoga or for
is there sth like yoga or for yoga to make it active digitizer?? i need a new tablet my R1F smoked, but its so confusing now lol S-pen is equal to a wacom digitizer?? i use tablets for reading, hightlighting and taking notes in class, handwritten notes, so passive stylus won’t work for me, but the yoga 13″ screen seems perfect for me XD

Nice post by the way, Here is another post which lists the specifications and features of Samsung ATIV 500t. please give it a look 🙂 thank you !
I purchased the Samsung ATIV
I purchased the Samsung ATIV with the ATOM as soon as it hit the shelves.
After a month of updates, it’s finally fully functioning and worth every penny I paid.
I use it for business. I never even considered an Android or IOS system because they are just not able to run the X86 software.
Plus, my ATIV has an HDMI out, three USB ports and two micro SD expansion slots.
The HDMI out is great when presenting on a large screen TV. If I need to use a projector, I can buy a mini HDMI to RGB gender changer.
Nothing but good things to say about this product now. A few weeks ago, I hated it. But, Samsung has made some significant driver updates.
***Plus, 11.6″ wide screen AMOLED is awesome for movies. The speakers suck, but that’s what headphones are for.
The HDMI out is great when
