Wired Performance – Amped Wireless R20000G
As with earlier wired tests, we’re testing network performance directly with a crossover cable between the LAN and WAN box as well as with CAT6 cables through the Apple Airport as a baseline to compare the Amped Wireless R20000G router to. Just to add something extra to the mix, we’ll also throw the results from our wired testing of the ASUS RT-N66U in as well.
I was surprised to see the poor results from the Amped Wireless R20000G in comparison to the other setups. While 4,042 sessions is nothing to sneeze at, it’s barely 10% of the maximum sessions we were able to maintain through all the other tests. I’m sure the router would be fine for a small household, but considering right on the box it says it’s great for “Offices”, it’s not a stretch to imagine that a small to medium office could possibly bump into that 4,042 session ceiling.
In earlier reviews we had all the Ping testing on a single chart, but because the Maximum ping times had a tendancy to be much higher, it would skew the scale pretty drastically. Because of this, we’ve split Maximum ping times off into it’s own chart. The chart above shows that with Average and Minimum pingtimes as well as the % of dropped packets we’ve got zeros across the board, which is great.
In the case of Maximum pingtimes, the Amped R20000G performed better than the Apple Airport and ASUS RT-N66U, and matched the crossover cable speeds of 0 ms.
The Amped R20000G actually performed extremely well in wired download speed tests, beating out both the Apple Airport and ASUS RT-N66U in both Average download speed and Minimum download speeds. In the case of Minimum upload speeds, the R20000G even beat out the Crossover Cable speeds by almost 6%. Maximum download speeds was just a bit under the ASUS and crossover speed test data but still pulled far ahead of the Apple Airport.
In wired upload speed tests we actually saw nearly the exact same results as we saw with download tests. The R20000G maintained steady numbers through all the upload testing, beating out the Apple Airport in all 3 tests, the ASUS RT-N66U in 2 out of 3, and the Crossover cable in 1 out of 3 tests.
Other than the maximum sessions issue, a pretty good showing for the Amped Wireless R20000G in wired testing.

seems okay but that AP and wifi adapter is really overpriced. Wanted to also add that it is becoming more common for many upper end consumer level routers to have 600mw transmit power. Before I purchase, I usually look at the FCCID and check for it’s transmit power and if it does not have external antennas, then I also check for U.fl connectors. (replacing a crappy internal antenna on a high end router from linksys or netgear with a quality 5-7dbi antenna will significantly improve your coverage and performance.
PS if you have a single level home, a 9dbi rp-sma omni directional = awesomeness.

While I haven’t used this particular device I’ve recently had to communicate with their technical support department regarding another device and I was impressed with the quality of their North American support department. The support representatives seemed to really care about my success with their equipment so I figured I’d throw that in there in the event its meaningful in considering their products.
