Over the past week or more we have been seeing a lot of news about Intel's rumored move to leave the world of socket-based processors behind after the pending Broadwell parts are released as BGA – ball grid array – and are soldered to motherboards directly. I would highly encourage everyone to read Josh's thoughts on the subject that are not nearly as damning as others might have you believe.
However, we got this official note from AMD earlier in the week that I thought I would share:
AMD has a long history of supporting the DIY and enthusiast desktop market with socketed CPUs & APUs that are compatible with a wide range of motherboard products from our partners. That will continue through 2013 and 2014 with the “Kaveri” APU and FX CPU lines. We have no plans at this time to move to BGA only packaging and look forward to continuing to support this critical segment of the market.
As the company that introduced new types of BGA packages in ultrathin platforms several years ago, and today offers BGA-packaged processors for everything from ultrathin notebooks to all-in-one desktops, to embedded applications and tablets, we certainly understand Intel’s enthusiasm for the approach. But for the desktop market, and the enthusiasts with whom AMD has built its brand, we understand what matters to them and how we can continue to bring better value and a better experience.
Obviously AMD is trying to persuade PC builders that not only is its path the safest in the future but maybe that supporting AMD today might help make sure it can arrive to the future well enough to continue the enthusiast path.
If Intel even starts to heavily side with BGA processors, is a move to AMD in your future again? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
Never left them. There’s just
Never left them. There’s just something about the underdog… plus for the price, they preform well enough for what anyone really wants to do (with the exception of special applications).
It’s good faith statements like this (even small ones like this) that make me think they have a bigger heart than big blue. : P

AMD has done more for the
AMD has done more for the community than intel has ever done or even considered doing.
AMD 4EVAH! Suck it, Intel!

MaximumPC got a statement
MaximumPC got a statement from Intel – “We will continue to offer socketed parts in the LGA package for the foreseeable future”
I like how AMD got a dig in there amidst the speculation though.
Long life to AMD.
Long life to AMD.
The questuion is who is going
The questuion is who is going to support AMD way into the future
Good post Ryan, this should
Good post Ryan, this should come as good news to all AMD enthusiasts of which I am one, its in everyone’s interests from a competition stand point that AMD does well into the future and provides products the compete well on price and suit budget builders.
Its awesome that AMD has
Its awesome that AMD has backwards compatibility on their motherboards. and that you can also have forward thinking for upgrades. but they need a whole redesign to compete properly with intel.
Considering AMD is still
Considering AMD is still competing with parts that barely reach Nehalem’s low end they’ve got a lot of work to do. And it wasn’t so long ago, like last week, that they were looking to sell off pieces of themselves to survive. I want a strong AMD if for nothing else to keep Intel on it’s toes and price competitive. They better shape up soon and ditch the WalMart philosophy.
Here is hoping AMD has a
Here is hoping AMD has a future.
The enthusiast market must
The enthusiast market must mean something to both AMD and Intel then.
I do appreciate the statement
I do appreciate the statement from AMD. I’ve personally moved the same processor from board to board three times this year as I upgrade & tweak my gaming rig. The leftover boards, & sometimes processors, go to friends or other builds & I feel better about the investment.
I’ve been building AMD based
I’ve been building AMD based systems for over a decade and plan to continue that trend. If intel were to concentrate in BGA going forward, all the more reason to stick with AMD.

well if AMD would step up
well if AMD would step up there Architecture with there processors, the FX Processors, because I’ve been reading reviews about amd architecture, it has not been that great!
Also AMD should make an FX processor for the 2011 socket, that’s where the hardcore gamer’s are at!!! I’m a PC gamer myself!!! Different Architecture for the FX Processors, AMD so you can move up in “RANK”!!!
