- I have a different kind of question for you. I have an HIS HD6850 that has been damaged. Six surface mounted capacitors and three resistors have been knocked off the back side of the board and were lost forever. With little to lose I removed one cap, measured the voltage, took a dead geforce 7600 and salvaged caps of approximately the same value to put Humpty back together again. To my astonishment the card works… kinda. It cooperates until I install the driver then becomes very unstable and struggles to go any further than the windows loading screen.
- I don't know the capacitance of the original components and cannot find any schematics online for any card ever created. I do not need the card but this has become a bit of a challenge. Any ideas or thoughts on how I might be victorious and declare dominance over this wreckage?

Allyn can you cache a Virtual
Allyn can you cache a Virtual drive?
For example you install windows in a virtual drive image, and wan you are setting up your Intel driver select you C drive to cache on a secondary SSD.

I would recommend the wired
I would recommend the wired AC vs the portable DC Soldering pen. I have been using the wireless and waiting for it to reach desired temp is irritating. Even more so when you do not have much patience and want to fix your electronics to continue on with the play.
Then, when the battery is dying, you simply think it’s taking it’s time heating up. I usually keep the setting to MAX to same on time.

Though for gaming I do prefer using either a wired Corsair unit, or my beloved Grados.
What does the on-die GPU on
What does the on-die GPU on the haswell chip do if you already have a discrete GPU?
Does it sit idle or can u make it do something useful like set it to handle only PhysX while the discrete GPU handles the graphics?
I guess it would depend if
I guess it would depend if you used Virtu to enable the CPU in low workload scenarios while the standalone card takes over in tougher tasks. Not sure what kind of OpenCL support that new unit will have, or how Intel will have implemented their transcoding accelerator.
If Haswell’s on-die GPU could
If Haswell’s on-die GPU could be dedicated soley to offlift PhysX while a dedicated GPU did the main graphics, it would be a huge selling point (if it were implemented well)…or if it could be dedicated to a single element off graphics work such as Anti-Aliasing relieving this burden of the main card…OOOH! Now THAT would be a useful trick!

The problem with PhysX is
The problem with PhysX is that NVIDIA will not license that to run on the Intel graphics portion. Nor will they develop the software to run on it. That is a competitive advantage that NVIDIA has with their PhysX implementation.
Unfortunately with the graphics pipelines the way they are, the Intel unit will not be able to do things like AA while the main video card handles the rest of the workload. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of using all that silicon effectively in modern applications, but we are not quite to the point of well implemented heterogeneous computing.

This is disappointing to read.
I was hoping that at the very least, Haswell would provide an “additive” effect for dedicated GPUs.
For example, I was hoping that a GTX 660Ti could be boosted to GTX 670 performance or better (e.g. 660Ti + Haswell GPU = 670 performance).
So it appears that if you are running a very beefy GPU and already have a respectable mid/high end Intel CPU, there is no real reason to upgrade to Haswell.
Still would like this discussed on the podcast.
Maybe someone at Intel/Nvidia is listening and something could be done about this.

Funny show. Josh was being picked on just like when he was a kid. I didn’t even feel sorry for him just like nobody felt sorry for him back in Jr High. Was he bald back then?
The branded PC idea isn’t bad. The way to pull it off is through a reseller. People respect your technical opinion more than Dr. Drae. Besides who do you trust to deliver the nuances in fine music more than a Rapper born in Compton. It is going to take that amount of hearing loss to understand what kind of damage we have already done to our own ears.
Come up with a rating system and give a seal of approval to machines sold by other companies that can be used by their advertising to help people pick what they are looking for.
Don’t offer the grade on your reviews just for their advertizing. Make the scale work across products from different companies and somehow time stamp it so it will expire or won’t be compared to next years products in the same way.
Example 2013 PCPER 7.9 Gaming 6.4 Business Performance Rating. The rating can scale on what matters most to gamers or non-gamers. They pay you to sit and rate their systems. The score can account for every freakin thing like build quality, heat, noise, power, size, bling, whatever. Those things would scale as well so what matters most has the greatest impact in that over all number. Then link back to the details on the score. When you are done you have a article and upfront money in your pocket for the unbiased rating.Next year the company might make an effort to improve in areas where the score was low making a better system for the customer.
