Introduction, Specifications, and Packaging
ioSafe + DiskStation = Disaster-proof NAS!
Last year we did a combined review of the ioSafe SoloPRO and the Synology Diskstation 212+ NAS solution. The ioSafe handled the function of disaster-hardened storage, capable of withstanding a typical building fire along with the resulting drenching from your friendly neighborhood fire department, while the DiskStation made the USB-connected ioSafe available to the network and added numerous additional features as part of its excellent DSM software suite, offering many features to both both home and business users:
The whole time I was working on that article, I kept wondering how cool it would be if both items were combined into one unit. You could then get the additional benefit of multi-drive redundancy *and* the disaster-proof protection offered by the ioSafe. Well, that just happened:
Behold the ioSafe N2!
Taking a closer look at the front, you'll note all of the features and indicators of the DiskStation have been neatly carried over to the N2:

Packaging:
The D2 comes well packaged with everything you will need to get it up and running, including a hex key necessary for removing the user-accessible protected drive cage. The key comes with a magnet to be stuck onto the back of the N2, which should keep it handy in case the need arises for hot swapping a failed drive. This is a nice touch.
Does this work with time
Does this work with time machine. Time Machine as you may or may not know does work on a network with an airport extreme Wireless N router or with Mac OS X server over bonjour.
Just curious. thanks!
Yup, it will indeed work with
Yup, it will indeed work with Time Machine. The N2 supports the exact same backup software as Synology products: http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?q_id=352.

Good write up Allyn I think
Good write up Allyn I think the cost is reasonable considering the quality of product being offered here and lets face it how much importancevalue do you place on years of work (your crucial data) being safe in a worst case scenario.
Any word on a 4 or 5 disk
Any word on a 4 or 5 disk product? I have an older 4 disk Qnap NAS that I’ll probably upgrade in a few years and I’d love something like this to replace it.
