Software and Performance

Software:

Since the N2 packs a fully featured Synology DiskStation within its shell, the software is no different from that installed on the DiskStation. In fact, the installation CD comes with the standard loadout image for a DiskStation 213, meaning firmwares are in lock-step with the current DSM release.

DSM is probably one of the most fully featured NAS software packages. It handles file, mail, FTP, web, print serving, as well as a file sharing front end for both iOS and Android devices. There are add-on packages which add LDAP, DHCP, webmail, DLNA, and various other packages. A full list is available here, with even more detailed info available on Synology's DSM package page.

Performance:

Back when we tested the DiskStation with the ioSafe connected to it via USB, here are the best results we could achieve:

With the N2, there is no longer the added overhead of the USB link, and the N2 is able to talk to both drives of the RAID directly and with native SATA speeds. This results in some significantly improved results:

Now that's more like it! You can have your cake and eat it too with this behemoth!
