Earlier this month, several websites reported that AMD’s latest Graphics Core Next (GCN) based graphics cards (7000 series and 8000 series OEM lines) would not be compatible with the Windows 8.1-only DirectX 11.2 API. This was inferred from a statement made by AMD engineer Laylah Mah in an interview with c1 Magazin.
An AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.
Fortunately, the GCN-based cards will fully support DirectX 11.2 once an updated driver has been released. As it turns out, Microsoft’s final DirectX 11.2 specification ended up being slightly different than what AMD expected. As a result, the graphics cards do not currently fully support the API. The issue is not one of hardware, however, and an updated driver can allow the GCN-based 7000 series hardware to fully support the latest DirectX 11.2 API and major new features such as tiled resources.
The updated driver will reportedly be released sometime in October to coincide with Microsoft’s release of Windows 8.1. Specifically, Maximum PC quoted AMD in stating the following:
"The Radeon HD 7000 series hardware architecture is fully DirectX 11.2-capable when used with a driver that enables this feature. AMD is planning to enable DirectX 11.2 with a driver update in the Windows 8.1 launch timeframe in October, when DirectX 11.2 ships. Today, AMD is the only GPU manufacturer to offer fully-compatible DirectX 11.1 support, and the only manufacturer to support Tiled Resources Tier-2 within a shipping product stack.”
So fret not, Radeon 7000-series owners, you will be able to fully utilize DX 11.2 and all its features once games start implementing them, and assuming you upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Still running my 5850…got it because it was the first one to run DX11 on Dirt2.
Still a good card but looking to build a new machine to coincide with 8.1/DX11.2
Looking to go with a primary drive SSD , Haswell i7 , DDR3.
Go ahead and laugh but I have a C2Q9550 , DDR2 and Caviar Blacks !
I am totally for improvements
I am totally for improvements when its needed, but did this really even matter? Or is this just another check box on a features list.
Who is actually playing on Windows 8 in the first place? Is it more than 10 people?
I can’t even think of one game that uses DX 11.1, who cares about 11.2 right now?
I can only think of this benefiting developers working on next gen games, but will Xbone even use 11.1?
I am just confused on why this is needed
If the hardware keeps waiting
If the hardware keeps waiting on the software to catch up, we’ll be even more stagnated than we are already. I’m hoping the hardware running way ahead will put pressure on the software developers to up their game so we can then start to see more meaningful and significant advances. Just look at Splinter cell’s visuals, quite depressing for a 2013 title imo.
Keep dreaming; I feel like
Keep dreaming; I feel like hardware has been outpacing software since 2007.

Given DX 11.2 will be Windows
Given DX 11.2 will be Windows 8.1 specific, it’s already DOA the same way DX 10 and 10.1 were for Vista.

Just kidding.
No one who owns Windows 8 uses a dedicated graphics card.
Exactly! Because now, we
Exactly! Because now, we have iGPU’s taking up 50% of our processers die space for mobile, laptops, low-end, medium-end, and high-end desktops! Who needs a discrete GPU when you can have a free one with every CPU whether you want it or not? Screw the advancement of hardware specific to your purchase, it’s all about convergence now. Ain’t it as Tony the Tiger would say, “GRRRRRRRR-EAAAAAT!”
Negative… Why use iGPU
Negative… Why use iGPU running DX11+ games @ 20FPS when u can use a G-Card and burn FPS up to 60+? I dont like the fact cpu’s such as 4770K have onboard graphics….It’s rediculous as most ppl who buy a K series are out for OCing anyways….and they combine it with a G-Card for MAX performance, minus Heat.. Well, I Guess they technically did do that…the new 4820K series is out..minus iGPU and has couple extra cores. Still yet this shhmessss over DX11 versions is silly; As mentioned before like only 2% of games even support 11 or higher and I might add that it’s not much better graphic wise than versions previous to 11. I use M$8, but if they don’t change it soon to work better with games, or software for that matter…Either drop to 7 Ultimate, or got to some Linux distros.
No need for a discrete GPU,
No need for a discrete GPU, AMD’s APU handles games just fine. The trend is also towards ITX platforms where a GPU is more a nuisance than a necessity.
This is great news. The

Hi,
I am using a laptop with AMD A10+7660G+7670M (2.5GB)with Win8.1 RTM Core Single Language with latest 131.0 Beta drivers & they are fine on 8.1. But I didnt check my dx version.Probably its 11.1.

I have been running the 8.1 Pro Review build 9431 for several months now with all game settings on Ultimate and several on 3D with the latest drivers from AMD for my GPU, and I have had no problems with game play on any games! My frame rates have left several of my friends very envious of my build! On the 3D side, only thing that I can say, is that with Win 8.1 and a dedicated GPU…… Awesome!!!
