You may very well have never heard of Silicon Motion (SMI), a major priducer of flash memory controllers, even if you've followed the SSD industry for a while. This is primarily because the vast majority of their products have been tailored for the devices that folks tend to not crack open during review, namely USB memory sticks, eMMC devices, and SD / CF cards:
Creating controllers in those arenas will tend to force a company to do a few things very well:
- Handle a very limited number of flash channels with the greatest speed possible, due to packaging requirements for very small devices.
- Operate at the lowest power draw possible as to meet the current draw limits of the host interface.
This has resulted in SMI developing a 6Gb/sec SSD controller, dubbed the SM2246EN, using the above techniques:
The block diagram shows what appears to be a fairly standard 4-channel configuration, though there are fewer steps in the pipeline as compared to SandForce and other controllers, which should help decrease latency and improve efficiency. There is also no compression engine, which means power consumption should be further reduced.

That claim of 60mW is fairly significant for a SATA 6Gb/sec SSD controller. SMI provided a round of power consumption lab tests and pretty much called everyone out by name in the results. No 'Manufacturer A vs. Manufacturer B' nonsense here:
Those are some significantly low power draws, especially the standby and partial sleep figures, which are where an SSD spends most of its time. Even sequential and random reads are roughly half that of the closest competitors.
SMI will be marketing the SM2246EN to SSD merchant vendors as well as producing their own in-house reference designs in several form factors and capacities. We intend to validate the performance and power consumption claims in the very near future.

Forum E-21: Controllers and Flash Technology, Part 1: Extending Performance Below 20 nm (Wednesday, August 14, 8:30am-10:50am): Stanley Huang, Product Marketing Manager of Silicon Motion, will be presenting “SSD Controller Technologies for TLC NAND”, as part of the Forum E-21. In his presentation, Stanley will discuss the trend of MLC and TLC NAND, and their performance gap shown in endurance and retention tests. Stanley will also introduce the technologies to enhance TLC performance and endurance. The final goal is to provide an SSD controller for TLC; the total cost can be lower and the reliability can be the same as today’s MLC and maybe better.
