Last night Ken and I headed over the local Best Buy to pick up my preorder of the new Playstation 4. What would any hardware geek immediately do with this hardware? Obviously we take a screwdriver to it and take it apart.
In this video, which is a recording of our live stream that started last night at 12:30am EST, you'll see us unbox the PS4, turn it on, take it apart and put it back together. And I only had to fix one piece with gaffers tape, so there's that.
(We'll have a collection of high-resolution photos later today as well.)
Though they are out of stock, Amazon.com appears to be getting more PS4s in stock pretty regularly, so keep an eye out if you are interested in picking one up still.
Happy Friday!
Gaffers tape? I wasn’t aware
Gaffers tape? I wasn’t aware Kentucky is now in the UK.

That Gaffers tape is going to
That Gaffers tape is going to cause a fire, it’s cloth backed and will attract and hold moisture, gaffers tape is great for its intended purpose, temporary securing cable to the stage floor, and such, while leaving almost no stickey residue when removed! It is not ment for taping bare electrical wire, or for long term securing of electrical/control cable looms, and other long term securing! An as far as the Gaffers name for this tape being UK only, the term orginated in the UK, thay did have theaters there before there was a Kentucky or a US of A, but everywhere there is a theater, TV, motionpitcure production, or tradeshow(very little use), there will be Gaffers tape!

when identifying IC’s with very hard to read lettering, it is always easier to simply take a picture of it. if you get the lighting angle just right, the lettering will be highly readable.
For example, this harder to read IC (mainly due to crappy ink or etching) is readable in this shot where a small flashlight was used as the light source. http://www.flickr.com/photos/razor512/8972957596/sizes/o/in/photostream/

Thanks for the teardown. Very very interesting.
One suggestion. How about next time taking the thermal paste and applying it on a cpu and running a couple tests to see how it do against a couple other thermal pastes that are sold for PCs? PS4 is a PC after all, so maybe a better thermal paste could help is cases someone lives in a very warm place.

is the power supply multi current ? like 110-240v
What’s the point iFixit
What’s the point iFixit already did it. Save your PS4 and play it!
iFixit does not put things
iFixit does not put things back together when they do a teardown. Nearly all their teardowns involve sacrificing the hardware in the name of chip investigation.

Yeah that’s not coming back.
At least now everyone knows that PS4 is hardware limited to HDMI 1.4 and will never support 4k@60hz signal.

Hey, quick question, could you tell what speed the sata controller runs at? (eg. SATA 1,2,3?)
I can’t find any images that are readable. And I’m not quite sure where it’s at on the board.
Thank you in advance
Hunter
