Yesterday at the AMD APU13 developer conference, the company showed off the upcoming Kaveri APU running Battlefield 4 completely on the integrated graphics. I was able to push the AMD guys along and get a little more personal demo to share with our readers. The Kaveri APU had some of its details revealed this week:
- Quad-core Steamroller x86
- 512 Stream Processor GPU
- 856 GFLOPS of theoretical performance
- 3.7 GHz CPU clock speed, 720 MHz GPU clock speed
AMD wanted to be sure we pointed out in this video that the estimate clock speeds for FLOP performance may not be what the demo system was run at (likely a bit lower). Also, the version of Battlefield 4 here is the standard retail version and with further improvements from the driver team as the upcoming Mantle API implementation will likely introduce even more performance for the APU.
The game was running at 1920×1080 with MOSTLY medium quality settings (lighting set to low) but the results still looked damn impressive and the frame rates were silky and smooth. Considering this is running on a desktop with integrated processor graphics, the game play experience is simply unmatched.
Memory in the system was running at 2133 MHz.
The second demo looks at the image decoding acceleration that AMD is going to enable with Kaveri APUs upon release with a driver. Essentially, as the demonstration shows in the video, AMD is overwriting the integrated Windows JPG decompression algorithm with a new one that utilizes HSA to accelerate on both the x86 and SIMD (GPU) portions of the silicon. For the most strenuous demo that used 22 MP images saw a 100% increase in performance compared to the Kaveri CPU cores alone.

Hate to disagree with ya this bad ryan, but under 30fps in a part of a game that is pretty low gpu usage. Maybe in heavy section of game but that area no. I do find it pretty funny its compared to a 4770k + nvidia gt630. Yea that seem a bit wrong to use a high end cpu and a crap gpu. A person with half a brain, would went little cheaper on cpu and spent more on gpu if they planned to game on it.

quit being silly, the gt630 is still faster than the hd4600 igp of the 4770k, so if it were kaveri vs. hd4600, then the intel part would be put to great shame. Also you are assuming that he didn’t check the more action oriented scenes to get a grasp for performance.
You are missing the point
You are missing the point here. AMD chose a high end CPU and a GPU core faster than the integrated HD 4600 to make the point that AMD will be ahead of the NEXT generation integrated part from Intel.

So that performence for less money is the comparsion here, and the AMD will probably find the pricing sweet spot, somewere in the range of their previous offerings! AMD can not afford to be overpricing this APU!

The reason for choosing a
The reason for choosing a high end cpu is not to show that Kaveri is faster than Intel. AMD knows they can’t touch Intel. They are not going after Intel here. They are going after Nvidia. By using a high end Intel cpu here, no Nvidia PR or Nvidia fanboy will say that the cpu is holding back 630. No 630 here is getting an extra boost from the Intel cpu compared with the onboard gpu that Kaveri is using. Still it is two times slower than Kaveri.

The only problem I see with
The only problem I see with the high end apu is the pricing, by the time you add good ram and pay the top tier apu price you can get better performance per $ from a budget cpu + gpu combo.
Unless amd/nvidia plan on stopping the production of low-to-mid range gpu’s this will always be the case.
For AMD and Nivida, it should
For AMD and Nivida, it should not be very hard to best Intel’s Iris pro graphics, in the price to performence ratio, and better than Intel’s Iris pro will define AMD’s and Nivida’s new low end SKUs! The mid range SKUs will be more of a direct competition between AMD and Nivida, with Intel out of the midrange running, by farther than the Kessel Run!
These chips are not meant for
These chips are not meant for heavy gaming, so it is not logical to invest in really fast RAM. Yes you do see a good speed bump, but as you point out, it is better to buy a budget cpu + gpu combo. On the other hand the performance you can get with typical 1600MHz is in many cases enough for most people to justify buying a Richland or Kaveri instead of going the root of a cheap quad core AMD cpu or a cheap dual core No HT Intel cpu + extra card.
Llano, Trinity, Richland, Kaveri, all give the opportunity to build a balanced system that will be good enough in most parts without spending too much money. Putting expensive memory on them is and always was pointless except for benchmarking.

It’s impresive that it can run BF4, but 30FPS in a hallway is a joke. Next time go “outside” and see where the framerate goes. I’m guessing into unplayable land.
