High resolution displays are very nice to have especially when you are looking at text and symbols (or edges of 3D geometry). WQHD+ is one of the resolutions classified under the 3K moniker with dimensions of 2880 x 1620. It has slightly more pixels than 1440p.
MSI has launched two notebooks with a 15.6" display in this resolution: one gaming and one workstation. Both laptops are remarkably similar except for a few key differences.

I can see wanting that display in a big 17+ inch dual gpu laptop but does a single 780m really have the power needed to game at those resolutions? That said i’m really glad more and more laptops are available with high res displays. I hope you guys can get your hands on a review unit.

And the gaming SKU is stuck with windows 8, make it come with windows 8 pro, and DownUpgrade it to windows 7 at the factory. And, do get ready for a steam OS based gaming laptop!
Apple started the ppi
Apple started the ppi obsession thing with putting super hi res in small screens. Shame that this obsession doesn’t filter over to pc monitors as we would have 4k 24″ and 27″ already. The extra resolution could actually start to be useful at these sizes. Shockingly we’ll probably see 4k smartphones within 5 years.

You will able to buy 4K 24″ monitor very very shortly thanks to Dell, and we’ll see 4K 5″ smartphones a lot sooner than 5 years. Next year we see the Samsung S5 with 2.5K (2560 x 1440) screen and I’d say 2016 at latest for 4K in phones and maybe 2015 for 4K in tablets.

What the fuck are you talking about the 780m is the highest end moble gpu available. It is the full GK 104 the only difference between it and the desktop 680 and 770 is clock speed. The 780m runs at 823 mhz while the 680 and 770 run at 1006 mhz and 1046 mhz respectively. Second nvidia hasn’t made integrated GPUs in years and AMD only has them on die with there cpus. Maybe you should think next time be for you talk out your ass or go troll else were.

I think the dictionary definition of an Integrated GPU is one that is ON DIE with the CPU, and Nvidia’s Targa has, and has had Nvidia Integrated GPUs for a few years now! So besides you treating a high tech company, like a sports team, or a salvation religion, what are you so peeved about! Nvidia and AMD are both making/planing APU type systems around the ARM based CPU IP. ARM For Nvidia, and x86, and future ARM based APUs for AMD. Nvidia makes Highend Descrete GPU, and competes with AMD’s descrete offferings, but Nvidia charges a higher retail price. And a price to performence ratio would be a better metric of preformence/system value, than who has the King of the hill, top dog position, as that appears to go back and forth every 6 Mo. Both company’s GPU products can run the latest games, and aside from the few driver problems, and marketing snafus (cherry picking review samples) on both sides. High tech companies are just high tech companies, and I’ll never understand these fanboy loyalists monobrow knuckle dragging!

First CPU and gpu on the same die is fairly recent before sandy bridge from intel and llano from amd integrated graphics referred to graphics integrated into the motherboard typically as part of the chip set. The line of FX CPU’s from amd still have this form of integrated graphics both ATI and Nvidia used to make chip sets.

Graphics accelerators called
Graphics accelerators called Intel GMA and such, marketed as “integrated onto the motherboard”, hell the descrete GPU on my laptop is on the motherboard, but that does not make it integrated graphics! But for a few years now, the kind that is integrated on die/package with the CPU, and shares a high speed internal bus, is what Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and others have been producing! I have never talked about $1000 for integrated/descrete graphics, and most of the graphics, the money making kind, will be sold using the licensed IP model, and Nivida will be offering some of its graphics IP up for license, the same way ARM holdings has offered its ARM CPU/GPU designs up for other third party device makers to make and use in their custom mobile devices, and any future AMD ARM based APUs sure as hell are not going to sell for more than $60, and those $60 ARM based APUs will probably have 8 full ARM 64 bit cores with CGN graphics, and be used on ChromeBooks and full Linux based MintBooks, etc! There will be ARM based designs using Nvidia or AMD graphics, and it will not be hard to make better than Intel graphics, for Nvidia, or AMD! I’ll never pay $1000 for any CPU/GPU combo chip, and and any Intel based laptop that I buy will have a descrete AMD or Nvidia GPU, and I never by this years model, I get last years model on sale, and screw having the top of the line graphics and paying the inflated prices! I am just waiting for someone to start producing many core based ARM 64 bit chips with licensed Nvidia or AMD integrated graphics, and the ability to SLI or CrossFire with a descrete GPU, and I am talking at least 24 ARM CPU cores, so I can tell Intel to kiss off! The Software I use will take all CPU cores/threads and peg them out 100% for hours sometimes, and those cores do not need to be x86 cores, ARM cores have SIMD instructions too!
Sandy bridge is 2nd core i series generation Intel CPU/Graphics, and Intel 1st generation core i series was Clarkdale for desktop SKUs and Arrandale for mobile SKUs.
Clarksdale had 2 dies on package, one for CPU and One for CPU, sandybridge had CPU/GPU on the same die on its package.
Gaming laptops are way overpriced for the money, but they get better pricing once they have collected dust in the warehouse for a year, and go on sale at a resonable price.
The only people that need more the HD resolution on a laptop are graphics designers, who is going to notice the difference at 60 FPS, on a small laptop screen!

I’m a bit confused on the new naming convention.
The current “high-definition” of 1920×1080 found on most new TVs is called 1080.
The new resolutions now seem to refer to the first number… 3k from 2880×1620.
is this just a marketing gimmick or am I missing something here? Shouldn’t our old HD screens be called 2K screens?
It’s strictly a marketing
It’s strictly a marketing term that has no arithmetic backing. The reason is because when 3840×2160 displays came out, they were called 4k. Even though it’s only twice as many pixels in either direction, combined it results in four times as many pixels. 2880×1620 is directly between 1080 and 2160, so the marketing peoples called it 3k, even though I believe it’s actually just 2.25 as many total pixels.
