It looks like some G-Sync ready monitors are going to be on sale starting today, though perhaps not from the outlets you would have expected. NVIDIA let me know last night that they are working with partners, including ASUS obviously, to make a small amount of pre-modified ASUS VG248QE G-Sync monitors available for purchase. These are the same monitors we used in our recent G-Sync preview story so you should check that article out if you want our opinions on the display and the technology.
Those people selling the displays? Digital Storm, Falcon Northwest, Maingear, and Overlord Computer. This creates some unfortunate requirements on potential buyers. For example, Falcon Northwest is only selling the panels to users that either are buying a new Falcon PC or already own a Falcon custom system. Digital Storm on the other hand WILL sell the monitor on its own or allow you to send in your VG248QE monitor to have the upgrade service done for you. The monitor alone will sell for $499 while the upgrade price (with module included) is $299.
This distribution model for G-Sync technology likely isn't what users wanted or expected. After all, we were promised upgrade kits for users of that specific ASUS VG248QE display and we still do not have data on how NVIDIA plans to sell them or distribute them. Being able to purchase the display from these resellers above is at least SOMETHING before the holiday, but it really isn't the way we would like to see G-Sync showcased. NVIDIA needs to get these products in the hands of gamers sooner rather than later.
NVIDIA also prepared a new video to showcase G-Sync. Unlike other marketing videos this one wasn't placed on YouTube as the ability for it to run at a fixed 60 FPS is a strict requirement, something that YouTube can't do or can't do reliably. For this video's demonstration to work correctly you need set your display to a 60 Hz refresh rate and you should use a video player capable of maintaining the static 60 FPS content decoding.

The video really shows the experience. Just feels nicer and easier to the eyes on the G-sync side of the screen. Had to use nvidia stereo player in 2d mode to really see it.
VLC, Windows media player etc just showed both sides stutter. This is an important point.
Ryan maybe you can put a short list of what video players would work here to really show off the difference. I was blown away, it’s going to make longer gaming session more fun because of how much easier it is to the eyes.
Best way I can describe it is comfortable.

Fist the upgrade was $150 and Nvidia said they wanted it to be under $99 dollars and now its $299. OUCH!!! Wrong direction there.
The module upgrade is worth more then the GTX 760 they recommend in the test system for reviewers and for that price you can buy a decent monitor instead of being stuck to 1080p on a TN panel.

For example, Overlord Computer confirmed to me they’re manually installing G-SYNC upgrade boards into stock ASUS VG248QE’s at the moment. This will change, when G-SYNC is factory-installed later…

ok hatres, download the video and play it correctly and see the glory. Once you see it then talk. G-sync is a logical next step. To have harmony between the gpu and monitor seems like something that should have been done years ago. Took Nvidia to take us there. Another great innovation for them.

You’ll still be tinkering with the Geforce Experience game optimization slider to find that range.
Nothing you can’t currently do in-game by adjusting visuals to get the best game experience now.
I think this is more aimed at the novice buyer who needs everything simplified for them and has less purchasing sense.

Every site I have read are praising G-sync: hardware cancuck, guru3d, pc per, linus and others. Everyone that I have read said great things about the tech.
Only issues were lack off higher resolution IPS displays which will be coming (CES hopefully) and the issue when you get below 30-35 fps. Anyone with mid range cards can surely modify setting to reach above 30-35 fps.
Can’t wait for 1440 G-sync ips… this will be my next upgrade.

What about that it only works while profiled in Full-Screen 3D mode. You cant put game in windows mode.
Don’t even know if you can capture and play to post videos properly. Its like the 290/290X. Looks great on the surface but needs some more looking into.
On a 60hz monitor as long as your GPU can sustain the FPS on V-Sync it should almost be identical. This needs to be a +$50 at most mark-up on a monitor not $150+

As soon as they have a 30″ 2560×1600 version of these with the same color and display quality as an Apple Cinema Display, I’ll buy it. I don’t even have a budget limit for it. I’d call $3k fair, but I’d pay more.
The going price for a 30 inch
The going price for a 30 inch 2560×1600 display is currently around 1500 in Aus and even with the elevated price of the module currently that will put you well under 3k. I would say 2.5k max for a screen like that. Not that i have the money to make that kind of investment.
Gsync is very welcome
Gsync is very welcome addtition to otherwise decent monitor but it does not make a monitor decent by itself. I will not “upgrade” to 1080p TN.
Overlord computers are
Overlord computers are looking for a chance to get these into their panels (ips, 1440p, overclockable to 120hz). Right now, I think that would probably be the best gaming monitor on the planet. I hope nvidia understand this. And help overlord out. Surely the demand is obvious across many, many, forums of people that know monitors.
Having tried Gsync hands on, albeit for a short time. I can tell you 100% that it’s not only noticeable, but very much a game changer. So far I have read forums of people saying how they refuse to get gsync because of the 3 seconds it takes to alt tab out of fullscreen, and they will only play in fullscreen windowed mode. I have seen people say everything from “So it’s just Vsync right?” to “what’s the point when I don’t see tearing at 120hz” to “I don’t see any problem with what I have”.
This is a shame, because it’s simply a lack of information speaking. Perhaps the only fault of the people here, is that they should have read a few more gsync articles to get a handle on what the tech actually does. I think a lot of this stems from the fact that people don’t know that they can get better. They don’t know that they have grown accustomed to frame-stuttering. They think that their 144 refreshes a second makes everything smooth on it’s own. And while that video posted sure helps, there is still going to be a gap between ‘that looks a little better on the gsync side’ to ‘this is going to change the way i get immersed in games’.
Right now, you need to invest in a washed out, color barren TN monitor in order to experience gsync. I’d advice anyone with a eye for visual quality (the very people that should get gsync) to wait until it hits IPS, PLS, VA, or OLED. Anything less and you are going to improve the smoothness at the cost of the actual visual quality to such a degree, that they cancel eachother out.
I’d rather get the Oculus
I’d rather get the Oculus Rift and program myself a bunch of virtual monitors surrounding me. All feeding off various desktops.
Over a few hz difference on one monitor.
