There is bad news at The Inquirer for anyone at Microsoft who is still labouring under the delusion than Win 8 + 8.1 will catch on just as soon as people see it in action. Not only does Win7 continue to hold a larger share of the market compared to its metrosexual cousin, Win7's market share is growing faster than Win 8+ 8.1, 0.22% growth compared to 0.05%. When people are willing to pay extra to remove Win8.1 from their shiny new toys and replace it with Win7 it says a lot about the acceptance of the new OS, currently even Vista holds a greater market share than Win 8.1, though Win 8 does have slightly more. You should also take note that as of today there are a mere 126 days before WinXP is no longer supported.
"PC OPERATING SYSTEM FLOGGER Microsoft's Windows 7 still holds more market share than Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined."

Competing with Vista? Vista
Competing with Vista? Vista still has a market share?
Good grief!
It was a helluva challenge
It was a helluva challenge with that operating system the first year or two, but overall a lot improved when SP1 and SP2 dropped. Unfortunately, a broken product at launch will always keep the image of being broken no matter how quick or late it gets fixed.
Windows 8 was a surprise disaster for most people, so far from what people expected from a logical upgrade that it turned people off. After all if it’s one thing I have learned through my 3 decades on this planet is that the small changes are always the hardest.
And what is this M$ codename
And what is this M$ codename Threshold? It sounds like M$ is taking users up to the Threshold, of no return to the desktop, and “gently” nudging them over! Yes once past the Threshold of the M$ event horizon and into the M$ black hole, with no hope of escape from the M$ closed ecosystem! An eternal TIFKAM damnation with endless TIFSPAM,
Crappy Apps, and thorough rectal probings of all the
users(suckers) vital metrics! M$: “And all your hardware and info, are belong to US!”
I’ll stick with 7, and dual boot it with tux wearing arctic flightless birds, until it is time to delete the 7 partition! Wtih M$ the road past 7 does not lead to heaven!Better watch out for that Monkeyboy singularity!
Good points sadly spoiled by
Good points sadly spoiled by such distasteful writing.
With M$, distasteful goes
With M$, distasteful goes hand in hand with their current OS offerings, and is the dictionary definition of M$’s current CEO! So this de facto unregulated public utility, for 3 decades, has to now compete, and what advertising tactics does M$ employ, well comment on that! And will this current CEO be off of the M$ board! Do not ever expect things to ever return to normal at M$, if there ever was a normal to begin with, but the market is leaning towards other OSs, and other OS derivatives, just as x86 is no longer the only game in town! With most enterprises sick and tired of M$ jerking them around, and costing them many Billions in unneeded retraining costs, expect many industry/government funded chairs, at leading educational instutions around the world, that specialise in penguin based ISO standard OS distributions. Step away from that desktop M$, it is not a phone or fondleslab, it is for work not play!
Their…not there.
Their…not there. …willing to pay extra to remove Win8.1 from there shiny new toys…
They’re – the contraction for
They’re – the contraction for “they are”

I guess I added to that
I guess I added to that market share as well. When I purchased my new laptop a few months back the first thing I did was format it and install a new copy of Win 7 that I purchased along with it.
Windows 7 is just such a great operating system for everything I do.
I’m glad to see I wasn’t the only one willing to get rid of 8 on their computers instead of try to put up with the darn OS. 7 makes me happy.
My HP laptop has a windows 8
My HP laptop has a windows 8 sticker on the bottom, but it came from the factory downUpgraded to windows 7, and I am sure M$ included the 8 pro in their numbers and bank account! I wonder how many of those win 8 devices have the, 8 but not 8, 7 upgrade on them! One other reason, I purchased the laptop, was that HP ships an equivalent SKU with SUSE, for the time when the windows 7 partition goes EOL.
But think of all those
But think of all those corporate accounts that will be upgrading over the next 4 months.
Our office is still using XP ,even though we were suppose to upgrade last March , then June , then September….
My guess 50% of corporate users will be hitting a wall in about 4 months or so, are the resources available to change 25 million or so systems in that amount of time?
my company is one of those
my company is one of those corporate accounts, over 5000 users world wide- all upgrading to new laptops with shiny win 8 stickers – loaded with enterprise Win 7.
we’ll be there in time
Yes to the first … not so
Yes to the first … not so much to the second in my day job
One good thing about windows
One good thing about windows 8 is that it has gotten me extra business. People usually pay me to set up the new computer that they purchased, in addition to installing windows 7.
If they have an old system running windows 7, it is not too difficult to transfer the license to the new system, in addition to copying over their documents, photos, music and anything else, including application settings, (generally easily done by copying the app data entry for the application)
whole process is quick, and it is an easy $20. Made about $100 over the past 2 days doing this.
While windows 8 can be modified a little to make the UI functional, the initial shock of an extremely inefficient and poorly designed UI is enough to put most people off of the OS.
way too cheep id charge 50 –
way too cheep id charge 50 – 100+ for the same thing depending on how much time the procedure is going to take, and it is still less than geeksquad. Us techies need to charge market value for our services and time and not discount ourselves. 😀
The increase of Windows 7 is
The increase of Windows 7 is largely due to corporations completing their migrations as Windows XP approaches its end of support. The company I am working at has over 40,000 desktops and over 10,000 laptops being migrated with less than 50% complete so far. There’s another company in the same line of business I know of that hasn’t started migrating at all yet. Windows 8 is on the horizon to begin deployments by the end of next year so don’t expect to see Win8 going up anytime soon from the business end.
