Earlier today, ioSafe launched a new 5-bay disaster-proof NAS device. The ioSafe 1513+ is essentially a Synology DS 1513+ wrapped in ioSafe's durable and fire / water resistant enclosure tech.
Here's a quick video interview with ioSafe CEO Rob Moore:
Three of these devices can be chained together, and with 6 TB drives installed, you get a whopping 90 TB of disaster-proof on-site storage!

ioSafe® Announces the ioSafe NAS 1513+ Powered By Synology: a 5 to 15 Drive Bay Disaster-Proof Network Attached Storage Solution for Private Cloud Data Storage AUBURN, Calif., January 6, 2013 — ioSafe® aims to expand its product line to secure and protect up to 90 TB of data per system with the new ioSafe NAS 1513+, a disaster proof network attached storage (NAS) appliance powered by Synology® DiskStation Manager (DSM). Aimed at business and pro-sumer markets, the ioSafe 1513+ can store and protect massive data volumes and serve the data privately while bypassing expensive, vulnerable and slow public cloud options – like an aircraft black box for network data.
The ioSafe 1513+ provides hardened data storage through a 5-bay main chassis combined with two optional 5-bay expansion modules for up to 15 drive bays per system. Designed to provide all the benefits of the private cloud with fast local transfer speeds, the new NAS can be configured to have none of the security risks and privacy issues associated the public cloud yet still protect data from natural disasters like fires and floods. Massive video, audio or data libraries can be secured locally and instantly be made available to remote workforce or clients as required. All security systems and access are 100% controlled by the end user without any third party cloud providers.
The high performance ioSafe 1513+ will be equipped with a 2.13GHz Dual Core Intel Atom CPU and 2GB of memory, expandable up to 4GB. The ioSafe 1513+ utilizes ioSafe's patented DataCast, HydroSafe and FloSafe technologies to protect data from loss in fire up to 1550°F and submersion in fresh or salt water up to a 10 foot depth for 3 days.
Additionally, the ioSafe 1513+ will certified for VMware® and Hyper-V® use and also be compatible with the multiple protocols of the award winning Synology DSM platform such as TimeMachine®, iSCSI, SQL, FTP, DHCP, CIFS, NFS and many more. Cloud, photo, video and music apps are downloadable within the Synology administration web interface. Automated backups, cloud file synchronization, various RAID levels are all available. Link aggregation and automatic failover (High Availability) are possible through quad gigabit network ports.
Performance will be 202.3 MB/s Write and 350.9 MB/s Read – plenty of speed for hundreds of office users, virtualization, SANs, backup, disaster recovery, video surveillance systems, heavy use graphics or audio installations.
"We're excited about the continued partnership with ioSafe. Protected with ioSafe's technology and the award-winning Synology DiskStation Manager the ioSafe 1513+ builds secure private clouds for businesses of all sizes, allowing them to share and synchronize data around the world" says Vic Hsu, CEO of Synology Inc.
"For the first time, ioSafe is providing enterprise grade features, speed and data protection for the rest of us. Imagine being in complete control of your personal, hardened mini-data center. The ioSafe 1513+ will truly allow the best of all worlds – speed, security, control and redundancy with none of the monthly fees and vulnerabilities of the public cloud," says Robb Moore, ioSafe CEO. "The person most interested in protecting your data is you and the ioSafe 1513+ is a critical piece of your security solution. The ioSafe 1513+ is designed for the 70-80% of data that sits outside the public cloud – critical data that might be too massive or expensive to upload but access is still occasionally needed."
The ioSafe 1513+ main chassis will begin shipping in March 2014 and optional expansion modules, floor mount kits and rack mount kits will begin shipping in May 2014. Introductory pricing for the ioSafe 1513+ diskless version will start at $1599.99. The loaded versions of the ioSafe 1513+ will come standard with enterprise class drives paired with ioSafe's Data Recovery Service Professional (DRS Pro) and No Hassle Warranty. DRS Pro is our enterprise class recovery and warranty that includes expedited data recovery and advanced replacement warranty services. DRS Pro will be available for additional costs to 1513+ diskless systems starting at $2.99 per TB/month for DRS Pro.
I’ve never understood the
I’ve never understood the ioSafe brand. If you’re looking for data integrity it seems almost ridiculous to shroud one of computings most unreliable non-resilient technologies in a protective cover.
Regardless of what solution you’re using for data backup or data availability if you do not have off-site backup in as many locations as possible your data is worth almost nothing.
ioSafe doesn’t make having as many copies of data available very easy at the price point they offer their devices for.
If you think about it this way, how many times is your NAS going to get hit by a bullet/burnt vs how many times would your HDD naturally die and you wish you had more backup locations and not fewer resilient backups.
