AMD's free sync has been getting a lot of well deserved attention at this years CES, Ryan had a chance to see it in action if you haven't checked out his look at AMD's under reported and under utilized feature. AMD missed an opportunity with this technology which NVIDIA picked up on with their G-Sync. NVIDIA has responded to The Tech Report's comments from yesterday, Tom Petersen stated that while free sync may be an alternative on laptops, desktop displays are a different beast. They utilize different connections and there is generally a scaler chip between the GPU and the display. Read his full comments here.
"AMD demoed its "free sync" alternative to G-Sync on laptops. Desktop displays are different, Nvidia says, and they may not support the variable refresh rate tech behind AMD's solution—at least not yet."

guess what nvidia there are
guess what nvidia there are also “like no” Displays with G-Sync on the market yet so its almost impossible to use it! Gosh i hate this whole marketing bla bla. free sync might not be usefull now but it might be sometime, the same goes for g-sync. But I personally would like to see more “free sync” displays because its not proprietary!
TO use free sync you have to
TO use free sync you have to use Triple buffering which introduces a TON of input latency. Which for a lot of people that is a deal breaker.

PSR was being worked on since 2010. There just needs to be standards so one vendors panel works with any source product not just a predetermined one like Nvidia.
Intel was already demoing Intel SDRRS in 2011. LG was in monitors as well.
The technology has been there just the industry is slow.
Care to explain why would
Care to explain why would triple buffering mean latencey once the buffer swap is not locked to 16.67ms periods ?

Excellent reporting on this
Excellent reporting on this topic- keep up the great work.
Glad to see Displayport 1.3 will provide a mechanism to handle this if manufacturers choose to implement it, and not a proprietary solution.
I am seriously considering AMD for Open CL and freesync for my next $500+ GPU instead of Nvidia due to this kind of misdirection.
Hopefully, Nvidia will get back to work making better GPU’s for OpenCL and implementing HDMI 2.0 already – they are slacking off or misguided it seems lately…

Have a great time waiting a couple years for that open standard to arrive while I can play as of today on my G-Sync monitor.
