This morning I had an interesting delivery on my door step.
The only thing inside it was an envelope stamped TOP SECRET and this photo. Coming from AMD's PR department, the hashtag #2betterthan1 adorned the back of the picture.
This original photo is from like….2004. Nice, very nice AMD.
With all the rumors circling around the release of a new dual-GPU graphics card based on Hawaii, it seems that AMD is stepping up the viral marketing campaign a bit early. Code named 'Vesuvius', the idea of a dual R9 290X single card seems crazy due to high power consumption but maybe AMD has been holding back the best, most power efficient GPUs for such a release.
What do you think? Can AMD make a dual-GPU Hawaii card happen? How will this affect or be affected by the GPU shortages and price hikes still plaguing the R9 290 and R9 290X? How much would you be willing to PAY for something like this?
I wouldn’t pay anything for
I wouldn’t pay anything for it, kinda like mantle!
That’s funny 🙂

Problem is, people will be
Problem is, people will be putting this in their systems and needed 1000w PSUs for it…
you said you would need a
you said you would need a 1000w PSU for a dual GPU card? So the CPU takes between 80 and 130 wats and add a few more for peripherals…. Are you really saying a dual GPU uses over 800 wats? Learn to count!
So you think its good to run
So you think its good to run a 1000w PSU at ~900w all year? You’ll have a dead PSU in 6-12 months, while I prefer to run at 40-70% load for life which NEVER kills my PSU before other stuff dies and I’m ready for a whole new box, while keeping the noise/heat down so I can still remain sane. 🙂
Even if they get a dual GPU to 500w, another 200w for the system means you’d be pushing 70% all year. I don’t like your math as much as his. It sounds like he’s aiming for about 70% load, which is about my max for good PSU life. You wouldn’t expect to get a long life from running your car at redline all year either.

287W for gpu alone, so 2 of them lower clocked probably around 500w. So yeah, you’d need a 1000w to run for very long at 600-700w or so especially with some people having many more components inside the PC (IE, I have 4 HD’s, 4 mem modules, external sata with power from the PC, etc etc). I bought a PCP&C 750CF so I could run <450 all year cool and quiet. If you hit ~500 or so draw it starts to get more noisy. I bought with 20nm gpu purchase in mind, not my current radeon 5850 (I'm likely between 200-300 all year right now, but expect to add another 100w with my next gpu purchase). I always buy a PSU so that the noisy fan modes ideally never kick in during it's lifespan and it produces almost no heat out the back too due to it not being worked very hard.
His statement saying you'd need 1000w psu is pretty accurate if you want to run for years without issues. PC Power and Cooling is the only PSU I know is labeled far below actual max, but I wouldn't run them at 80-100% either. Most other PSU makers don't do this AFAIK. You are complaining about his comment but not understanding what he meant or apparently thinking it's ok to run near max load all year? If he chose something like 750-800w for his statement he'd be pushing things quite hard. Never mind Ocing anything on top, which can shove a SINGLE 290x to near 500w.

2x290x 833w…
“The part that makes us cringe the most is the shear system power demand as you increase voltage and core clock. The power usage requirement skyrockets on R9 290X. The XFX R9 290X CrossFire overclocked 833W system power usage result is just insane for two cards. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for everything else on a 1KW power supply. ”
Fans at 100% to get there too…LOL. a 750-800 couldn’t run 2 in CF and this card won’t get much lower.

Lot of haters out this morning. But hopefully it will bring some competition back to the market for single card performance and bring down prices the high-end NVIDIA’s.

I’ve followed a lot of PC Hardware reviewers and Ryan Shrout seems to have a better grasp on the technical details of the hardware than the vast majority of other reviewers. I’m pretty confident that he knows more than this random troll.
It’s gonna be an unmitigated
It’s gonna be an unmitigated disaster, but very fun to watch.
To clarify: it should be fast, the fastest, no rendering issues due to the DMA engine in Hawaii, but:
*we won’t be able to buy it as none will be in stock anywhere
*it would be very expensive
*it would consume a lot of power
*a 780 SLI would be almost as fast while not having the 3 disadvantages above (I would have said 2x 290X, but…)
well maybe the *coin miners
well maybe the *coin miners will jump all over this dual SKU, and the single GPU SKUs will be more available. But who knows if the *coin market can continue to eat more GPU cards, AMD should price their cards according to what the market will bare, and not let the retailers get all the rewards, as they are doing now! AMD needs to stay in business, and maybe the *coin market will give AMD the funds to start trying to compete with Intel in the desktop x86 CPU market again, least those enthusiast Intel chips start costing more than a top end dual GPU. Both AMD and Nvidia should be making ASICs for the mining market as there appears to be a market for such products, with chips that only have hashing functionality. With the retailers the ones responsible for the high prices, AMD should open up a direct channel for sales, and limit supplies to the retailers who took advantage of AMD’s retail pricing policies.
LOL that’s awesome.

Vesuvius, huh?
Assuming this
Vesuvius, huh?
Assuming this doesn’t turn into sortof-vaporware like the dual 7000 series card, it will be interesting to see how much of a thermal disaster this thing will be. Wasn’t the 290X batshit LOCO with the thermals, in a way that not even the Ghz edition 7970 was? The 7970 was LOUD on its stock cooler, but the 290X is even louder, and it literally cannot handle an overclock. How the hell are they putting 2 of these chips on one board?
More broken promises from AMD, that’s my prediction. Someone tell AMD that if this card comes out in 2015 or 2016, it will be utterly pointless.
Well AND another card that
Well AND another card that gets so hot it will melt stupid AMD releasing a new card and their drivers are still in beta. AMD need to get their shit together Ass clowns.
I think a dual R series GPU
I think a dual R series GPU would be interesting, though it would have to have have beastly cooling and high power requirements, not to mention AMD can’t keep up with demand and can’t keep prices in check, very bad for AMD long term as their thing has always been “bang for the buck”.
Ryan, maybe AMD wants to clone you?

likely dual r9 280(x) card
likely dual r9 280(x) card which is nothing more then a rebadged 7990 in the end. AMD has problems keeping 290 cool with their crap cooler so not likely possible with 2 of them on a card.
Deal with it.
Deal with it.
IDK… Perhaps AMD may well
IDK… Perhaps AMD may well have been binning the best Hawaii chips for a while, and figure what the heck gamers don’t honestly need this thing! Let’s overprice a pair of chips with a three fan/slot monster and make a “boat load” before this stupid crazy Litcoin market “goes bust”.
Good for them how many regular “Gamers” are really going to get their panties in wad… I can’t afford it boohoo! If this thing came with 8Gb and could run six 4k displays in Eyefinity I’d say kudos for being in a position to develop such bleeding edge hardware. Dam the naysayers, those who’d whine of the power… the heat, if AMD can do it and make money I don’t mind sitting in the grandstands watching the Jumbotron and they guy who can build set that up won’t fret the money either.
