During the opening keynote, NVIDIA showed off several pieces of hardware that will be available soon. On the desktop and workstation side of things, researchers (and consumers chasing the ultra high end) have the new GTX Titan Z to look forward to. This new graphics card is a dual GK110 GPU monster that offers up 8 TeraFLOPS of number crunching performance for an equally impressive $2,999 price tag.
Specifically, the GTX TITAN Z is a triple slot graphics card that marries two full GK110 (big Kepler) GPUs for a total of 5,760 CUDA cores, 448 TMUs, and 96 ROPs with 12GB of GDDR5 memory on a 384-bit bus (6GB on a 384-bit bus per GPU). NVIDIA has yet to release clockspeeds, but the two GPUs will run at the same clocks with a dynamic power balancing feature. Four the truly adventurous, it appears possible to SLI two GTX Titan Z cards using the single SLI connector. Display outputs include two DVI, one HDMI, and one DisplayPort connector.
NVIDIA is cooling the card using a single fan and two vapor chambers. Air is drawn inwards and exhausted out of the front exhaust vents.
In short, the GTX Titan Z is NVIDIA's new number crunching king and should find its way into servers and workstations running big data analytics and simulations. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing someone slap two of them into a gaming PC and watching the screen catch on fire (not really).
What do you think about the newest dual GPU flagship?

Even with the bitcoin craze
Even with the bitcoin craze two AMD R9 290X are still a better buy and more so now that prices are coming down.
Scaling will still be lack luster since they will still need the same old PCI-E Bridge chip aswell to contribute to frame latency.
Or more reasonably two 780ti
Or more reasonably two 780ti they are even coming out with 6gb versions so there is no memory advantage I would also be surprised if the 780ti doesn’t have a clock advantage.
I just tested two R9 290X and
I just tested two R9 290X and bounced them up against my two Titans. The R9 cards beat the Titans in almost every test, but they were:
1) Bigger (almost an inch taller and longer)
2) Louder (the fans were noticeably louder when the GPUs started to get a load)
3) Hotter (It took the Titans much less time before fans started to spin up)
4) Made with lots of plastic
The AMD cards were great in terms of performance, but it came at an expense, even with the XFX Double Dissipation coolers. So “better buy” is really subjective. You can probably buy a Hyundai that can out perform a BMW and for less money, but when it comes down to it, it is still a Hyundai.
this is exactly the point GTX
this is exactly the point GTX Titan isnt a luxury item, although they intended for it to be when they released it, but AMD crashed their party with the R9 290X, and Nvidia had to respond with 780Ti, making the Titan inbetween 780 and 780Ti, with double the price, a big failure.
if only they put work into the Titans like Asus does with their RoG series, then yes, i woulld see a value, but telling me it’s ok to have reference card with 2000$ more for inexistant value, is retarded.
your analogy is wrong, the Titan is actualy the Hyundai, asus rog is the BMW, one makes sense to be luxury, and the other doesnt, especialy if they dont keep performance lead, as far as i know AMD is planning bi-gpu R9 295X, which logicaly will perform better.
honestly i dont see the freaking value, it’s beyond me to see some ppl even trying to defend the pricing, seriously wtf.
IT’s A REFERENCE COOLER/PCB…or what they are planning to release for 3k, then 2 weeks later R9 295X beats performance for 1k$, then we get 780TiZ for half titanz price ?
seriously some ppl lack common sens
Point 1 is not a point.
Point
Point 1 is not a point.
Point 3 is not a point.
Point 4 is not a point.
Point 2 is a real thing, but given the difference in noise between XFX DD and Titan barely noticeable and the difference in price, well …
1999$ would have made more
1999$ would have made more sense, comparing the perf of 780ti and titan, the ripoff is evident, now the addition of another 1000$ just for the fun of it screams “we want to build luxury line, and we look for idiots to help out”
untill now i dont get why the titan is so much expensive than 780Ti, and why perf are so crappy.
oh wait 200$ per 1Go GDDR5, so 6giga X 200$=1200$ +1400$ for bi-gpu = 2600, the 400$ left is just for the R&D to put 2 gpu in one pcb, now pricing makes more sense, should have known GDDR5 was so expensive.
Is comparing CPU cores to GPU
Is comparing CPU cores to GPU cores really accurate?
I love video cards and going
I love video cards and going to Fry`s to build stuff.
Been a tradition since late `80s
the value, where is the
the value, where is the freaking value ? performance it’s slower than 780Ti, build quality it’s reference cooler, collector ? wtf is there to collect, asus rog is worth collecting, well crafted, quality build, better pcb, headroom for OC…asus Rog, is a luxury item yes, it adds value, it’s collector, limited.
wtf is going on with Titan Z freaking reference card, they add value on what ? wind…
and get some sheeps to sheer for nvidia
Well, as with the 690, you
Well, as with the 690, you can get the same result for the same or less money, but something is to be said for getting that much GPU horsepower into a single card. This would be pretty awesome for a compact Mini-ITX build that wants to run 2560×1440 resolution at max details. I am sure there will be a market for it.
That said, the 690 was a great card. The build quality was top notch. And I am glad the reference designed Nvidia cards continued to follow that build style. Sure, they all look the same now, but at least you know what you are getting is very well made.
The price sort of makes me want to vomit just a little. You can easily buy two decent gaming rigs for this amount. I guess there is a market for anything though.
And I just read that it is a
And I just read that it is a triple slot card. Yuck. I guess it is needed, and I suppose getting the performance of 2 Titans on 3 slots could make sense for people that need the additional input slots on their motherboard.
Killer card, but that price
Killer card, but that price is killer too! I’m rather happy with my GTX 780 for now. 🙂
This card is really meant not
This card is really meant not for the gaming world, and they don’t expect to sell many to the gaming community, it is pretty much marketed as a GPGPU card. As such it is pretty incredible, as that market is usually less concerned about price, but about the size, and stability of the cards.
It should also be noted that even as a three slot design you can fit more cores into a given space, and if you get lucky you can find a board that will support three of these (as evidenced by their use of three in the stanford server), or better yet for computing compactness use breakout cables like the mining community has done to run a ultra high power render farm or other compute workload on these cards.
they have a Line for Pro use,
they have a Line for Pro use, it’s called Quadro, if it was the case they would have called it Quadro, not name it after a Gaming line of product
The problem was that many of
The problem was that many of us bought the original Titan as a budget Quadro, undercutting that market. My Titan outperformed the highest end quadro (at the time) for the work related tasks I/we cared about, and it also happened to play games which is a great solution for us consultants.
As I saw it, the Titan was a compromise between a (usually) work related compute load and decent gaming capabilities. The Titan Z pricing makes more sense when you place it in the Quadro lineup instead of the GTX one.
Having said that I still think the price is dumb for the Titan Z.
I love my Titan, and although I had buyers remorse for a week or two, now that I have beaten the crap out of it for a year and have zero urge to upgrade, I have to say it is my favourite all time card. It also helped that I did a weeks worth of rendering in a weekend which pretty much made up the difference in cost between it and the next GTX card.
can we now put 6x titans (3
can we now put 6x titans (3 titan Zs) in a single system now?
also, a Mini-ITX build with one should be nice, along with the customary m-itx heatsink the D14.
what would happen if we took
what would happen if we took 7 of the titanball Z cards? would a mystical Titan Appear and grant us the wish of full 22nm GPUs.
Dragon Ball Z joke if you did not catch on by now.
This doesn’t interest me at
This doesn’t interest me at all, Facebook buying Oculus Rift is more important news than this. Both subjects make me sad. 🙁
This conference was a bit
This conference was a bit boring but interesting info on how nvidia is moving towards new innovation in its technology. Was a bit dissappointed that maxwell cards were not even talk about but I guess they will continue milking kepler. GTX titan z c’mon now what the hell nvidia. Im very dissappointed as a customer with the card announcement but im very happy with my gtx 670. No talks about dx12, openGl, new driver dx11 improvement, and Maxwell. SMH… $3,000 is not tailored to the average customer or even a bit beyond… I guess the 20nm (Maxwell) is very hard to manufacture or expensive to make for now…
People don’t wanna give pc
People don’t wanna give pc gaming a chance because they think it’s too expensive, even though that’s not the case it sure is hard to make that argument when nvidia is doing everything in their power to make the pc platform seem inaccessible. GTX titan for 1k, 780 for 650, titan black for 1k, titan z for 3k. With all their talk about moving the pc platform forward with geforce experience, shadowplay ect… it seems they are doing the exact opposite. Oh and if I hear another moron go on about how this is for content creation and it’s not marketed at gamers i’ll be sick. If this wasn’t marketed for gamers it wouldn’t be under the geforce brand and they wouldn’t specifically state that it’s built for 5k multi-monitor gaming. What is the point of this other than to line their pockets with cash and the tears of the titan black owners who just shelled out 1k for the highest end gpu that lasted a couple weeks. Same thing they did to the titan owners last year with the 780, the 780 owners when they released the 780 ti and the ti owners when they released the titan black. This card will not outperform two titan blacks or two 780 ti’s and yet will cost 3k, WTF NVIDIA. If you’re a content creator buy a titan or two and save a grand. The console fanboys have something to wave in our faces thanks to nvidia and I bet there’s a person on the fence about pc gaming that will see the titan z headlines and decide to stick with consoles.
I was not upset with the
I was not upset with the 780Ti release for a couple of reasons.
Most important was the 6 GB of memory. There was no way to justify this as a work expense (or at least work subsidized) without it. I regularly use 4.5+ GB with CUDA and rendering workloads. I can both game and do work on the same machine, something that never seemed to work right with Quadros.
Also, it was months before we could actually get 780 Ti cards here, so it did not feel any different than any other hardware release of the past 15 years. 3 months is a long time to wait for newer and faster kit in this industry.
As for the console people, I would not expect this to change anything at all. The 750 Ti is a good counter example to the idea that nVidia is somehow hostile to PC gaming. I also have a 750 Ti sitting in a Core i3 and I am amazed at how well this performs @ 1080p. And I still get a fully functioning PC.
I laughed when the console marketing people were spewing transistor counts (as if that actually meant something) since my video card alone already exceeded the count of either console. The console people can say what they want, PC gamers can game on 4k *today*, and don’t need to wait 5 years for the “next gen” of consoles.
While I am not happy with the $3k price tag, I guess this is what happens when you have zero competition in this space. Seriously, if you are in the market for 6 titans in a system or can only fit one card (like my company provided desktop), what are you other options? Since there aren’t any, nVidia can rightfully choose whatever price they want. If anything I am pissed at AMD for dropping the ball so badly in the past few years.
shappire got an Tri-x R9 290X
shappire got an Tri-x R9 290X 8Go GDDR5, get 2 of them, for the same price as your titan, or 6 of them(with total osf 48Go) for the price of the titanZ
I can’t actually buy that
I can’t actually buy that locally, and each GPU still only has 4 GB of memory available (and I already regularly exceed this).
Also the cost of the single GPU R9 290x is between $720 and $800 CDN dollars here with the Titan holding at $1099 and the Titan blacks at $1199. At that price point the Titan is an obvious choice for people in my circumstances, that is to say people who do more than game with our GPUs.
I am not a fanboy of either company. My GPU before the Titan was a 7950, then a 6950 before that and a 4890 before that. Prior to that run of ATI/AMD I owned a 9800 GTX and an 8800 before that. I have been flipping between the two since the introduction of the Radeon branded devices. More than anything I like competition, and it seems like AMD is solidly in 2nd place against their rivals at the moment. I really hope they can turn things around or else we are all screwed.
Good news, Titanball Z is
Good news, Titanball Z is $3000
Bad News, 22nm Maxwell is delayed for a little longer than expected.
You are doing the same
You are doing the same mistake in all your posts. 20nm NOT 22nm. We are not talking about Intel here.
Titan Z is not really for
Titan Z is not really for sale. It is there to make you think that 780Ti and Titan at $700-$1000 are reasonably priced.
How many where laughing at Titan’s $1000 price? Now many see Titan Z’s price and think that $1000 is not that bad after all. 780Ti is considered even cheap!!!
Bravo Nvidia.
We can thank the coin miners
We can thank the coin miners for taking the pressure off of nVidia. The in stock R9 290x here are $799. This is almost as stupid as the $3000 Titan Z.
On the bright side in the next few months there are going to be a lot of cheap “lightly” used GPUs floating around 🙂

Awesome tech. Titan Zs will sell because the high end buyers don’t care about 3 grand. They just want the top of the line.
It is still a quality solution and some companies will pay up as well. No SLI, custom coolers, or drivers to worry about and a lot of GPGPU power.
