We have great news for you this evening! The demise of the LGA processor socket for Intel desktop users has been great exaggerated. During a press session at GDC we learned that not only will Intel be offering LGA based processors for Broadwell upon its release (which we did not get more details on) but that there will be an unlocked SKU with Iris Pro graphics implemented.
Iris Pro, in its current version, is a high performance version of Intel's processor graphics that includes 128MB of embedded DRAM (eDRAM). When we first heard that Iris Pro was not coming to the desktop market with an LGA1150 SKU we were confused and bitter but it seems that Intel was listening to feedback. Broadwell will bring with it the first socketed version of Iris Pro graphics!
It's also nice to know that the rumors surrounding Intel's removal of the socket option for DIY builders was incorrect or possibly diverted due to the reaction. The enthusiast lives on!!
UPDATE: Intel has just confirmed that the upcoming socketed Broadwell CPUs will be compatible with 9-series motherboards that will be released later this spring. This should offer a nice upgrade path for users going into 2015.
given this gpu is rated for
given this gpu is rated for 1280x720p (say 8 inch)!i hope pc builder aren’t gona go higher then that !an a small screened surface pro 2 xbox edition would be nice!saw apple go and I was like ?wtf intel clearly say the iris pro 5200 is aimed at 1280x720p ,why would hardware maker ignore intel?
I’m sorry, I have no idea
I’m sorry, I have no idea where you’re getting this information, but it’s so very wrong that it makes you look like a fool for repeating it. The current generation Haswell with Iris Pro can easily handle 4K resolution for 2D/video, and is capable of running current games with medium to high quality settings at 1080p/1200p. I have personally run a number of games at 2K resolution on Iris Pro with good results.
This next generation Iris Pro is expected to be faster yet again, so you’ll want to revisit your “facts” and recheck them.
Also, no Surface device has shipped with Iris Pro, only with the baseline GT2 Intel HD graphics. Even then, performance manages to be quite good.
Well… when you say ‘current
Well… when you say ‘current games’ I think new games. It’s not running BF4 @ 1080p or 1200p on medium. It will run it at 720p on medium however. Also, Metro: LL is even more demanding on the GPU, so I doubt it’s going to have much success there at 1080p. (Based on benchmarks I’ve seen of BF4, not personal experience)
WIth that said… 720p medium BF4 is still really good for a non-dedicated GPU. My 2-year-old laptop with a dedicated 1gb ati 5650m can’t even run BF3 on it’s absolute lowest quality/resolution
This would be a great option for casual gamers, and even hardcore gamers if their games of choice are Source engine like CS:GO and TF2, or just less graphically demanding/older but still relevant games.
I’m looking forward to seeing how much better Iris Pro is on the Broadwell chip. It’ll be time for a m-ITX rig without a dedicated GPU to take over casual gaming duties in the living room!
hi,
my current haswell iris
hi,
my current haswell iris pro in my macbook retina is definetly NOT designed for 720p.
i can play on 1920x1200p at maximum quality: dota 2, cs:go, diablo 3 …
