UPDATE: If you are looking for the live blog information including commentary and photos, we have placed it in archive format right over here. Thanks!!
It is nearly time for Microsoft to reveal the secrets behind DirectX 12 and what it will offer PC gaming going forward. I will be in San Francisco for the session and will be live blogging from it as networking allows. We'll have a couple of other PC Perspective staffers chiming in as well, so it should be an interesting event for sure! We don't know how much detail Microsoft is going to get into, but we will all know soon.

will there be video on
will there be video on youtube after?
i can not watch live because of my internet :(, but could watch on youtube that night or the next.
I believe it will be a live
I believe it will be a live blog, not a live video stream. I could be wrong, though.
Won’t be video but we’ll have
Won’t be video but we’ll have photos at the least.
thanks, i hope i can find the
thanks, i hope i can find the whole presentation somewhere.
will still check out the live blog though.
personaly, i believe directx
personaly, i believe directx 12 is just marketing, they will talk vaguely about general ideas, without announcing any date.i dont have any hopes of seeing it before 2016, and i doubt they will announce anything new, just directx 11 tweeked features + cpu overhead to counter mantle, ofc they will not say that directx 12 require windows9, and not retro compatible with existing Gpu.
talking about API, AMD
talking about API, AMD released new catalyst beta for Mantle and True Audio, couple hours ago, and Eidos released Thief Patch for Mantle & True Audio.
are you gonna do any performance testing ? and True Audio Review ?

S/A and extremetech have said
S/A and extremetech have said the DX12 is Mantle roflmao.
Intel and Nvidia have no option but to lick AMD Mantle boots. Seeing Eric Demers from Qualcomm isn’t a surprise either.
you are a fool man. Mantle
you are a fool man. Mantle was made by both AMD/M$ as a gimmick to sell AMD hardware since AMD is in the next gen consoles like xbox1 under M$. AMD is going broke and need all the help they can get.
if it was only to sell amd
if it was only to sell amd hardware, mantle from the start was never planned to be a proprietary for AMD hardware, and they said whoever wants his architecture compatible can join in.
beside consoles like xbone and ps4, have gcn architecture yes, but they dont have mantle as API, there is a plus for devs to port games yes, because they now GCN well.
and AMD isnt going broke, yes their sales on cpu sucked, by the gpu departement done extremly well, because they contracted both consoles.
AMD actualy made a bet on PC gaming and it’s paying out, the only misstep they made so far is the APU, which is really great idea, that technology failed to support, simply because of the memory GDDR3 instead of 5, which happened because of a misfortune, making apu well perfoming cpu but memory hungry, at some point this will be solved anyway
Crytek is gonna make
Crytek is gonna make cryengine compatible for mantle, with the licences the engine has it’s a huge news, AMD planning on making Mantle compatible for linux/steamOS.
in my opinion Mantle has proven it self and AMD took important steps for it to take off, if Mantle link windows to steamOS & consoles based on GCN, then Mantle would be a no brainer solution for developers to maximize their profit.
even if directX12 actualy manage to pull off some new technology, for it to stop mantle it has to get out 2014/early2015 which i doubt they can, and even if they manage that, Mantle being the link between linux and windows would give it a huge advantage to stay in play, and probably make steamos a real pain for microsoft OS monopoly.
if AMD manage to snatch another big developer support that would lock mantle bright future, no matter what microsoft/nvidia/intel does, exemple if epic unreal engine support, or ubisoft.
another interesting point that thief benchmark showed is how Cpu performance doesnt scale as expected, when you see FX8350 200$ cpu get boosted for games to get 5-8% lower than a 1000$ intel cpu 4960K, makes you wonder if microsoft isn’t in bed with some other player for profit, not having a crap api that doesnt take advantage of the cpu, so that ppl can keep buying new cpu for mediocre gains, while they can keep their old cpu and still have last games playable, or is microsoft just doesnt like AMD ? why does a 200$ cpu perform almost as good as a 1000$ one in gaming.
Blahblah blah more amd mantle
Blahblah blah more amd mantle scribbling, I came here to see news on DX12.

come back in 2016 for DX12

“NVIDIA will support the DX12 API on all the DX11-class GPUs it has shipped; these belong to the Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell architectural families. With more than 50% market share (65% for discrete graphics) among DX11-based gaming systems, NVIDIA alone will provide game developers the majority of the potential installed base.”
lol thats a the player base
lol thats a the player base few months back, projected into 2 years from now…alot can change in 2 years from now, nvidia fan’s might dislaike it but AMD played a very whiled card with mantle, and they are still keeping crossfire up their sleeves, now everyone say mantle is for low/medium rigs, but once crossfire is unleashed, enthusiast will see how significant performance boost will be, 4k at 120fps…
I think the biggest point of
I think the biggest point of Mantle is that it does not need Crossfire. That burden could be given to the developers, who are capable of much tighter load-balancing optimization.
I'd hope that AMD and NVIDIA would still provide a standard solution to load balance, likely using AFR and mirrored memory as is the case for both SLi and Crossfire today, but Mantle and (according to the presentation today) DirectX 12 will apparently allow independent addressing of GPUs. This could allow for features, such as "render layers" which are composited by z-buffers, even with different geometry or rendering algorithms.
Thanks for that Scott, really
Thanks for that Scott, really wanted to hear about this. Big change for multi GPU setups for the future on DX12!
I must say I was expecting a
I must say I was expecting a little more from this announcement especially considering how much hype vr has at this years gdc. Not sure this announcement warranted anything more than a press release especially considering how little info is actually available right now.
it was actualy really
it was actualy really pathetic, directx 11, with mantle features, coming out in 2 years, microsoft haven’t been working on directx otherwise we would have seen more features, just a lie when they said that they have been working for over 2 years, how do you work on something for 2 years then come up with what you have right now + what your rival brings, it’s AMD speech about mantle by the letter when they talked about CPU overhead.
microsoft is dead they dont have any innovations left in them, no ingenuity, just a bunch of greedy ppl overpricing their products for the brand, i wish mantle takes off on steamOS, and give ppl an alternative to this shity windows
I’m sorry… but did
I’m sorry… but did Microsoft bring a computer that’s still running 8.0, not Win8.1? I don’t see a start button : P
Also, I’m glad they’re back supporting older hardware. I have a pair of 7970’s and would be super mad if they pulled this on me again (happened with my HD4890. Bought it and then DX11 hardware came out).
