The end of support for XP is an annoying but sensible move on Microsoft's part however today’s announcement that Windows 8.1 EoL is the Patch Tuesday in May is anything but sensible. The announcement states that no more updates for Win 8.1 will be released, if a customer wants to receive updates they must still be running Win 8 or upgrade to Win 8.1 Update 1. The continued support for Win 8 machines seems rather odd and is perhaps intended to mollify corporate users who have not had the 8.1 patch pushed out as Microsoft has removed Win 8.1 Update 1 from their WSUS servers over a week ago making it impossible for corporations to properly upgrade their users to Update 1. For those who bought a device recently this deadline does not give them much time to apply Update 1, especially when you consider the amount of critical errors installing Update 1 is causing. Catch the vitriol over at Slashdot and think back to the good old days when all you had to keep track of were the various flavours of Win7.
"Microsoft TechNet blog makes clear that Windows 8.1 will not be patched, and that users must get Windows 8.1 Update if they want security patches, InfoWorld's Woody Leonhard reports. 'In what is surely the most customer-antagonistic move of the new Windows regime, Steve Thomas at Microsoft posted a TechNet article on Saturday stating categorically that Microsoft will no longer issue security patches for Windows 8.1, starting in May,' Leonhard writes. 'Never mind that Windows 8.1 customers are still having multiple problems with errors when trying to install the Update."

I have been a Microsoft guy
I have been a Microsoft guy since MS-Dos but holy sh*t these guys are smoking something special. How many times can one company shot themselves in the foot before they realize that it actually hurts. Come on MS pull it together and get your sh*t straight. Becoming hard to argue on your behalf.
There is a solution for all 8
There is a solution for all 8 related problems, and it’s called 7. Just get a PC/Laptop that can be downUpgraded to 7, from that terrable TIFKAMed 8. 7’s going to be around longer than XP, and M$ will not have any business if it tries to not extend 7. Many enterprise customers, and German/other cities are moving to the BirdTux environment and ecosystem, enterprises have had Linux on their servers for some time now, so they do have the trained and experienced staff to move to linux on the desktop, or dual boot it with windows 7, or run the whole laptop/PC business under a VM environment on the Desktops/Laptops and run 7 and Linux at the same time. Even Big Blue, one of the orginal mainframe daddys, is going BirdTux, with its power based servers. M$ is going to Excavate the ET game, to research “new and exciting” UIs with which to shove down our throats, and to make room for all of those unsold surface RT tablets. Better include TIFKAM, and 8 along with the reburial. And now for your entertainment, center stage, Nadella with strings attatched![note Bill and Monkeyboy up on the catwalk pulling those strings] Dance for us Satya, dance dance dance!
I know this is anoying, but
I know this is anoying, but Windows 8.1 update is simply better than windows 8.1. There is no reason not to update, they are just forcing their hand
Deep fried CACA is better
Deep fried CACA is better than any of the 8’s, best to have 7, and be done with that TIFKAM SCAM contrived in Redmond. M$ trying to get the last cent from its users, with a little software repurchase, all over again, along with 30% off of the top for a piece of the action! Well Gaben sure ain’t paying, along with many that still got brains! M$ zombies gunna starve, relying on any pea brains that would fall for that TIFKAM crap, not much nutrition in that, ay MonkeyBoy.
8 update, simply more crapp piled deeper!
windows 8, at its core is
windows 8, at its core is better than windows 7. forget about the GUI, forget about the start menu, the kernel is slightly more stable, less resource hungry, and the task manager is incredible. The problems that people had was mostly related to the interface being so different from a desktop and not realy designed for a large screen with keyboard and mouse. That is fixed now, boot into desktop mode, run apps in resizable windows, hit the windows button on your keyboard and the start menu opens up. Plus directX 11.2. So remind me, now that it functions just like windows 7, why is 7 better?
Why you say, well windows 7
Why you say, well windows 7 is already bought and paid for, no need to repurchase crappy TIFKAM Apps, or deal with the extra loads of updates, and botched updates, and rejiggering, that will never make 8 any more than the dismal failure that it is, and why can’t windows 7 get a service pack with the under the hood improvments, or directX 11.2, why the 11.2 bait and switch? M$ tried to place its late to the mobile market failure on to the backs of the desktop users, that’s why. People are tired of the M$ duplicity, and PC/Laptop OS profit milking, that has blown up in M$ face, trying to paste a forced crApp store UI onto the front of a perfectly good enough windows OS that is win 7, with that Terrable 8, GTFO, with this same old tired spin, you spinion! It 7, then M$’s EOL after 2020, in the OS arena, for many home and enterprises! Going to be 7 and Linux, on the VM, or 7 and Dual boot with Linux, until 2020, or later if 7 get a extention, then so long MonkeyBoy, rot in hell, after 7’s gone!
We’ll I’m not saying to
We’ll I’m not saying to upgrade from 7, but if you have 8 or 8.1 why wouldn’t you upgrade. Also this kinda defeats the need to downgrade a new system to 7. If you have 7 save your money. But windows 8 at its core is an improvement.
Depends I’ve heard mixed
Depends I’ve heard mixed reactions from people that love the new Windows 8 interface they aren’t too happy about bringing the mouse and keyboard back into things. Needless to say they could go about it a better way like they do with Service Packs. Give people a year then cut support. The problem is the naming scheme is a disaster. If they were going to call major updates something it should have been Windows 8 SP1, SP2, etc. or 8.1, 8.2, etc. Their naming conventions really make no sense. Saying Windows 8.1 Update 1 is an update to an updated Windows 8 is just silly and confuses the average person.
With that said, yeah like SP’s they should be done relatively quickly, especially if you’re a consumer. The problem is the 8.1 update has caused 3 major issues for enterprise customers off the bat. This is why companies are hesitant with Windows updates. There are a lot of variables and they make up a huge percentage of that “market share” figure we always see tossed around.
If they do not like a mouse
If they do not like a mouse and keyboard let them get a tablet, but do not force the whole user base to suffer the Toy UI fondleslaber’s brain-dead interface, keep TIFKAM out of windows on laptops/PCs, and make it, and its CrAPP store, an optional install, at a later time! Better yet flush TIFKAM down the toilet and into the septic tank! 7’s got the Aplications that I need, I do not need my applications dumed down, repackaged and resold to me! 7 and Linux, then Linux only after 7’s EOL, dual boot, then M$ gets the boot after 7’s support ends! Linux also runs most of the applications that I use, so it will be just fine come 7’s end! This whole paying for M$’s failure in the mobile tablet/phone market, by making desktop users suffer TIFKAM hell is geting old, and will just hasten M$’s demise.
Keep you greasy fondleslab fingers out of our pockets M$!
Metro or whatever they call
Metro or whatever they call it is still available on the just no longer default on large screen pc’s
Errors 0x80070020, 80073712,
Errors 0x80070020, 80073712, 800F081F and 800F0092 through 80070003; as well as the fact Microsoft yanked it from WSUS.
The timing is way too tight.
Actually, they are supporting
Actually, they are supporting 8.1. They call it update 1.
This is one of the dumbest articles in a while. The update is free. There was no free upgrade for XP.
Check your facts before
Check your facts before sniping. Win 8.1 and Win 8.1 Update 1 are not the same, just like XP, XP SP1, SP2 and SP3 are not the same. You might happily apply the update but not everyone is able to apply Update 1 without killing their machine nor can corporations even get at it currently.
Wouldn’t matter if I could
Wouldn’t matter if I could actually update my media center, but I can’t because the 8.1 update breaks media center on it.
Wow am I glad I am staying on
Wow am I glad I am staying on Windows 7 for as long as possible. Linux here I come. Microsoft’s handling of their flagship OS is embarrassing for a company with near total market domination on the desktop and laptop markets.
This whole story has started
This whole story has started from some click bait hate parade on Windows 8.
Just like when you run Windows update and you have to update to the service pack first before it continues to update to current. THIS IS THE SAME THING.
It’s basically a pre-requisite patch. Why people are blowing this out of proportion is mind boggling.
More like hate of the M$
More like hate of the M$ monopoly shoving TIFKAM Turds down the desktop OS users throats, and expecting users to say YUM, instead of gagging like they have! No more double billing MonkeyBoys, trying to reinvent a wheel that was not broken to begin with! ButtHurt much, Spinion!
Just how is a SME supposed to
Just how is a SME supposed to do that when the update has been pulled from the WSUS queue?
You seem to be home user/enthusiast who doesn't have to support an entire infrastructurenor ended up with a dead machine when installing Update 1. Good on you but that is not why I posted this nor what I am attempting to start a discussion about.
Please visit us and call posts click bait as often as you want but realize the world is a larger place than you seem to assume it is.
