The only way Epic could have excited gamers more than the announcement that Unreal Tournament is coming back is to announce that it is utterly free with no DLC or pay-to-win … which is exactly what they did! It will be built on Unreal Engine 4, the one you can license at $19 a month and will be designed from the ground up to be moddable and eventually there will be a marketplace where modders can trade, sell or give away their work. Polygon wasn't given any hint of a release date but this news is so exciting it almost makes you forget UT3 ever existed!
Of course you don't have to wait to join in on some classic UT2K4 action, just head to the Gaming Forum and see when the Fragging Frogs will be playing next.
"Developer Epic Games revealed today that the multiplayer shooter's next incarnation — in development in Unreal Engine 4 for Linux, Mac and Windows PC and called simply Unreal Tournament — will be free, moddable and collaboratively developed with fans."

It’s a shame UT3 never caught
It’s a shame UT3 never caught on. It was definitely flawed, but as far as the way it ‘felt’ to play – as in the weightiness and response to input – I have never played an FPS as good.
I hope they can make it as good as UT99 and UT2004 and keep the feel as good as UT3, or possibly better.
Also, I really hope UE4 works with MSAA like UE3 rarely did. FXAA/MLAA is worthless.

MSAA is an fps killer, in a game like this that is the last thing you want.
If I understand correctly, UT
If I understand correctly, UT is not only free of charge but properly open-source (and with Linux support). This news is ridiculously good and beyond anything I was even hoping for. Praise Stallman.
That’s great news. UT2003 is
That’s great news. UT2003 is the only FPS multiplayer game I played to any extent, and I really enjoyed it. I’m much less of a gamer these days, but I’ll certainly be checking out a new UT.

Absolutely the best news I’ve heard in years! Especially with Linux support. I dropped Windows a while back and I haven’t had too many games to choose from…this is a win in my book.
Ubuntu + Gnome 3.12 and UT…a winning combo for this aging gamer.
I will mention, if you’re looking to lose the Windows OS, Ubuntu+Gnome or elementary OS is worth a try…or perhaps keep your eyes on the Ozon OS project…it’s shaping up to be a helluva nice looking OS. Built for gamers.
I stand corrected. This is
