Conclusion

Let’s start with the negatives and get those out of the way. The GT70 2PE is powerful and even relatively affordable considering what it’s packing, but there are compromises involved. For starters, it is very loud (especially when Cooler Boost 2 is electively activated), and its design looks dated and a bit tacky at times (plastic casing, glossy control center with touch-sensitive buttons). It also throttles under very heavy load—though that isn’t likely to be an issue under any circumstances really.

But the greatest criticism, and the one which you’ll hear many people complain about most likely, is the fact that it’s huge and that it can’t last very long on a charge. That’s all true, but here’s our point: if you’re buying this thing for the portability, you’re making a mistake anyway. The appeal of the GT70 is its ability to offer a literally unsurpassed gaming experience in a mobile package that can be easily moved around the house, or perhaps to a friend’s house, and effortlessly stowed away when not in use. It isn’t meant to be a frequent companion on an airplane or in a shoulder bag.

The NVIDIA Battery Boost technology proved that it can definitely expand the gaming possibilities when running on the notebooks battery, in some cases by quite a lot. Portal 2 and Bioshock Infinite had exceptional results though other games like World of Tanks and Diablo III pointed out that NVIDIA has room to expand support for this feature if they really think it will be a system seller.

If you can come to grips with that, and as long as you don’t mind those other quibbles we mentioned, there’s really nothing stopping the MSI GT70 2PE from being your next favorite gaming companion. It retains all of the strengths of the GT60 model we reviewed last year, but with even more power and a truly ridiculous SSD RAID storage configuration. In short, it’s one of the fastest mobile gaming solutions you’re going to find—and it’s just $2,699.
