In Europe, NVIDIA set up a simple, official page. Its title is "THE ULTIMATE IS COMING | NVIDIA". On it are the words, "The Ultimate Is Coming" as well as a countdown to 9 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 22nd. At the same time, North Americans get "Ultimate Quest", a text adventure game which ends on — surprise — Tuesday with a giveaway of "something big" for the first players who finish.

What is it? It is very likely the rumored SHIELD tablet, especially considering Videocardz has convincing slides which are definitely made in NVIDIA's style. What made SHIELD so unique was its controller form factor (and NVIDIA's software support). According to the slides, the controller will now be a wireless accessory to the base tablet. What will come standard is a stylus, the "DirectStylus 2 with 3D Paint". This seems like an odd addition, unless they have already planned use cases.

As for the tablet? The slides claim Tegra K1, 2GB of RAM, 1920×1200 display, 5MP (HDR) front and rear cameras, and a MicroSD card slot. Previously, leaks suggested a 640×480 front-facing camera, which did not make sense to me. With the original SHIELD lacking a camera, it seemed very odd to relaunch with a bad one. 5MP, especially if it is a good sensor, is much more reasonable (especially for the front-facing one).

The leaks also suggest interesting price points, especially for such a powerful tablet. These details can change at a moment's notice, though, so I won't really acknowledge it (apart from embedding the slide below). They do seem to be targeting the end of the month for North America, or middle August for Europe, which is a very quick launch. Then again, it is ready enough to be a prize for a contest which ends on Tuesday.

I except we will see how much of this, if anything, holds up on Tuesday.

(1) will this tablet run a Full Linux distro.
(2) will this tablet support the full desktop versions of OpenGL, and OpenCL.
(3) if it can run Full Linux, and has the full desktop versions of OpenGL, OpenCL, will it a least be able to run Gimp, and better if it can also run Blender, although I would pay more for more RAM, say 4GB minimum. I know that Running Blender is pushing it, but this tablet may be good for 3d mesh modeling at least, and the graphics will probably beat Intel’s mobile/tablet offerings in graphics.
Why Nvidia has not considered a Graphics tablet, to compete with the very expensive Windows/x86 versions, well I do not Know, but if Nvidia is hoping to create an Android, locked into a Nvidia closed ecosystem, then forget it, this device will be for play, and not much else. I can hope that some company would take the Denver K1 version, and create a more affordable Graphics tablet SKU(maybe system76, or other) with a full Linux, and the ability to run the open source graphics packages, that are very good at what they do, for a great price(Free). Hopefully Apple will eventually make a Full OSX version of the iPad, and then there can be some healthy competition in the graphics tablet market, but here’s hoping that once the Custom ARMv8 SOC start coming from AMD, and others, as well as Nvidia, that there will be many choices for tablets that run a Full OS, and not a limited OS, like Android, or RT. Nvidia really does not Know how to properly sale SOCs, if you look at their previous Tegra offerings, but maybe that can change.

Wasn’t Shield so popular they were practically giving them away not that long ago lol?
The tablet market is already heavily segmented and dominated by various venders. I can’t help but think Nvidia is kicking the dead horse at this point throwing good money after bad after Tegra has failed to take off. I guess they want to try doing the Microsoft approach. If you want adoption do it yourself.
Good luck. I for one would never buy a tablet, let alone one from Nvidia.

I have a first generation
I have a first generation Nexus 7 tablet and have been looking to upgrade because I use it so much. It’s like my smartphone… but for home use with a larger screen! Imagine that, a home-smart-phone! But sadly it is starting to show its age and slowing down when browsing some sites and apps. This justifies itself to me from the front facing speakers. That was the deal breaker for the second gen Nexus 7. Maybe I should wait for the new Nexus 8 instead? Higher res? Ahh, fk it, I’ll buy this one.

You’ll be limited to wifi or pay up the a** for phone data. That means staying with-in the house most likely. Hot-spots well you can use a more powerful device like a laptop or a less intrusive one like your phone when your on the go. Being at home means your Desktop and Laptop are with-in stretching distance. If your really in the market for a tablets I’d think you’d be looking for a lighter, higher rez and longer battery life so you’ll have to carry it around less and doesn’t heat up as much or constantly connected to a re-charger.
When you get your hands on
When you get your hands on one let us know how the shield controller feels? Not many options in the wireless controller market.
