Ryan I wrote it in the 285
Ryan I wrote it in the 285 article.

Have you contacted AMD about this or checked the specs for the older cards?

That 250Watts for the 280 was correct. That 200Watts correction was wrong. Your conclusion about going down only by 10Watts with 285 is wrong.
Everyone says the AMD vishera
Everyone says the AMD vishera Octo cores run hot but they don’t they may have a high TDP but it isn’t a hot chip I had 8350 that I had running at 5.0 ghz on air (which is what a 9590 is in reality) and it didn’t get hotter than 70-75c under load (in an air conditioned room) with a Zalman 9900max cpu cooler after I upgraded to a 3930k I tried to use the same cooler and i couldn’t get it to go past 4.2 ghz reliably it would post at 4.4 ghz but would hit 90c playing games like skyrim so productivity was out so I had to go to water cooling now i have 2 x 240mm and 1 x 120mm custom setup (no gpu’s) it can hit 5.0 ghz so I DARE YOU put a 9590 and a 2011 chip (any 6 core) with hyperthreading on the same cooler h100i or h80i overclock it as close to 4.7ghz as you can get silicon allowing (since 9590 come overclocked out of the box) and see which is hotter I bet a stock 8350 is still cooler than a stock 2011 6 or 8 core
I think in the podcast I
I think in the podcast I mentioned that the 9590 @ 5.0 GHz didn't hit more than 45C on the LCS that was installed on it. Yeah, they don't run amazingly hot, but they do pull some power!
Phenom IIs aren’t much
Phenom IIs aren’t much different either; I’ve got a 1100t at 1.6v peaking at 45 degrees with custom water. It’s probably pulling over 300w, though.
ryan, aparently those chip’s
ryan, aparently those chip’s will go as high as you have got if you have got a really good one… i dont know but thats whats going around.
Bah, all this talk about
Bah, all this talk about upgrading to X99 and the Haswell-E CPU’s… Too much expense! How about 80.00 dollah!!
Not sure if you guys have ever mentioned a nifty LGA 1366 upgrade that has been available since around 2010…
I recently bought a Xeon X5650 CPU to replace my i7 920 (I thought it would be a “gamble” – so put it off for about year in fact). It was like 50.00 GBP (free shipping) for a refurb pull on Ebay (here in the UK). It’s been quite a popular upgrade for many years… The CPU even booted fine on my old 4Ghz i7 920 settings!! I was able to use my old/ existing waterblock – yet another cost win 🙂
For reference …

I’ve still to stability test it – but it appears to runs at the golden 1.23 V (might even go lower). This is about a whole 0.1V less than the settings I used for the i7 920. So 6 cores for the (electricity) running cost of 4 cores. 🙂
