Known mainly for its DVD re-encoding prowess, our test uses the Handbrake command line interface on a full DVD rip to gauge CPU performance.

Though long term video transcoding isn't like to be a use case for an Ultrabook, it is useful to see how the hardware could handle it if necessary. The Core M 5Y70 puts in a reasonable score but still finds itself a solid 20% behind the Core i5-4200U.

 

x264 HD Benchmark


The popular x264 benchmark available from graysky does a two-pass H.264 encode on 1080p video.  The first pass appears to be more clock-sensitive while the second pass is more heavily threaded.

In the first pass of the x264 HD benchmark, the Core M 5Y70 is again about 20% slower than the both the Core i5-4200U and the AMD FX-7600P. But remember: the Broadwell-Y processor is doing this with a TDP one third of Haswell and one seventh of Kaveri!
