Can you guys add a tag
Can you guys add a tag enclosed in brackets before each headline in a story like this that tells everyone it’s either an [Advertisement] or perhaps a [Press Release]/[Sponsored Content]?
Just as a way to add a point of demarcation between the posts you’re being paid for and the organic content. Anything that decreases ambiguity while increasing professionalism is the way to go in my book, and this idea would certainly do that. Journalistic integrity is what will keep me, and others i’m sure, coming back.

Also what’s up with
Also what’s up with contacting Amazon.com whenever i post a comment? What information are you sending them?
PCper you really need a
PCper you really need a state’s Attorney General to read you the advertising regulations, keep up this blurred line between articles and Ads! Press releases not indicated as such, and other promotional content hidden as “subjective” content!!!!
We are hosting a live event
We are hosting a live event on pcper.com/live tomorrow night, clearly labeled in the title s "powered by NVIDIA" to indicate their sponsorship. If you look at the previous iterations of the events, we make it *pretty clear* that this is an NVIDIA sponsored event: https://pcper.com/news/Editorial/PCPer-Live-Borderlands-Pre-Sequel-Game-Stream-Powered-NVIDIA-Part-2
There is no "editorial" in this – we aren't comparing graphics card performance, we aren't talkg about differences between Radeon and GeForce parts. It's simply an opportunity to play Unity and NVIDIA is the one allowing it to happen. They are also donating the prizes.
We have done this in the past with AMD:
https://pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/PCPer-Live-Bioshock-Infinite-Game-Stream-Win-Games-and-Graphics-Cards-AMD
https://pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/PCPer-Live-Tomb-Raider-Game-Stream-Win-Games-and-Graphics-Cards-AMD
https://pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/PCPer-Live-Crysis-3-Game-Stream-Win-Games-and-Graphics-Cards-AMD
Ok, but why not just add a
Ok, but why not just add a bracketed disclaimer before the headline, instead of some ambiguous phrase within the headline?
I personally don’t care whether you’d done it for AMD, Nvidia, Intel, or Santa Clause. What i care about are clear delineations between organic content and advertisement. This isn’t asking for anything anyone wouldn’t expect from a news outlet, this is about as “standard procedure” as it gets when it comes to journalism.
I don’t know if you’re just
I don't know if you're just being hard on me to be a pain…but did you read the post? The phrasing like "powered by NVIDIA" and "partnered with NVIDIA" is definitely in there. We aren't trying to hide anything at all.
I’m not trying to be hard on
I’m not trying to be hard on you, and my apologies if i gave you that impression. The truth is that I love this site Ryan, particularly your focus on advancing storage technologies.
The reason I bring it up is because I want to keep coming here, but i consider sponsored any content on any site that isn’t clearly marked or called-out to be deliberately blended in on purpose. The appearance of this article is that you’re blurring organic in sponsored content together in order to make it appear organic.
Of course you have sponsors and sponsored content, but i should never have to read an entire headline in order to know which is which. Add some bracketed disclaimers, make the headline color bright pink, whatever, just add a clear distinction between the two that doesn’t require anyone to read a single word in order to understand that *this* content is different from *normal* content.
It’s your site of course, and i have no fantasies that you care what i have to say on this subject, or that you’ll lose any sleep if i don’t come back. But Ryan, these are basic journalism rules. Imagine if you opened a news paper and the first story was an unmarked piece of sponsored content with nothing to distinguish it from any other story except a phrase at the end of the headline? That is essentially what we have here.
Anyway thanks for listening and your thoughtful response.
Regards
“i should never have to read
“i should never have to read an entire headline”
Really, a headline?
This is usually the point
This is usually the point where i give up, but in this case i don’t want my silence to be misconstrued as tacit agreement that you’ve convinced me to be cool with your native advertising.
You’re being deliberately obtuse with your responses, to the point of them being dishonest. I’ve already explained why this is a problem, and you’re refusing to address the issue. If you refuse to change your advertising policies knock yourself out, but don’t play dumb and ignore the valid reasons for why blending paid and organic content together is a bad idea. You’re insulting the intelligence of those who care when you give wide-eyed faux naive responses questioning why it’s a problem when i’ve already explained why it’s a problem. And frankly as a result, i don’t care anymore.
Actually tho, it all kind of makes sense. Native advertising is deliberately designed to fool the reader into thinking the ad is an editorial opinion, why then should i be surprised that a “journalist” who engages in such a practice would take me for a fool when his site is already geared toward that expectation? My bad.
If the characters [Sponsored]
If the characters [Sponsored] are in the headline specifically, do you not also have to read the entire headline? I would assume reading the headline is bare minimum effort for a reader to discern interest in a story.
If those bracketed characters
If those bracketed characters are at the beginning of the headline as i suggested then no, you wouldn’t have to read the full headline, just the first word, and the brackets themselves would indicate the dissimilar nature of the content. But really even that is just a compromise. Ideally the sponsored content would be called out from the other content by an obvious visual queue (different color, higher or lower elevation from other stories, or separated from organic content in some other pronounced way).
Also phrases at the tail end of headlines like “powered by Nvidia” or “Win an AMD graphics card” are ambiguous and don’t clearly convey to the reader that the story in question is sponsored.
You labeled it wrong
You labeled it wrong then.
There is no “editorial” in this – we aren’t comparing graphics card performance, we aren’t talkg about differences between Radeon and GeForce parts. It’s simply an opportunity to play Unity and NVIDIA is the one allowing it to happen. They are also donating the prizes.
Subject: Editorial, Graphics Cards
All AMD links you provide only have
Subject: Graphics Cards
The never ending bias continues.
Sure, that tag is wrong.
Sure, that tag is wrong. Should have been general tech. Bias…huh? Man I love the internet!
Hey there Anon, just wanted
Hey there Anon, just wanted to write a longer reply here. All of my previous replies last night were from a phone, so I apologize for the shortness.
First, I want you know that my comments here are not an attempt to dismiss you or your concerns. I take these types of questions very seriously and we are considering them internally. But, let it be known, that I consider pcper.com more of an education site, one that focuses on reviews rather than a "journalistic" outlet with a heavy emphasis on company news, financial reporting, etc. Yes we write about that stuff sometimes, but in reality the vast majority of our time is spent on reviews and information on the products itself.
Yes, the event going on tonight is sponsored by NVIDIA. They are providing money for the resources required as well the prizes that we are giving away. Based on my views, as I was clearly showcasing in this thread, I think the "Powered by NVIDIA" in the title as well as the language used throughout the post ("PC Perspective has partnered with NVIDIA", "joined by some new NVIDIA faces") makes it clear that this is a paid-for partnership.
Also not that we aren't reviewing the game during this event, we aren't comparing NVIDIA/AMD GPU performance during that event, we are simply showcasing a game that I think is damn impressive looking while giving away some hardware thanks to NVIDIA.
But please understand, I appreciate the commentary and feedback!
I didn’t see this until just
I didn’t see this until just now, thanks for the reply. Best of luck on your endeavors Ryan! You guys have some top notch writers here, and i hope you are getting the recognition you deserve for your contributions to the industry.

Ryan > I am unable to see the
Ryan > I am unable to see the complete point of view from Anonymous. By skimming through your articles, I can tell if they are sponsored or not. Even from a pure text point of view.
For this one in particular I find it clearly an announcement /reminder of the AC release that is clearly sponsored. For those who are clueless may not show up at all for the Broadcast event and may just skip that post and read the next. (PAID)
As for myself, I will attend because there’s usually some sort of discussion about the game and what nVidia pitched into it (Pcper’s point of view). (ORGANIC)
And not to forget the prizes too 🙂 (PAID)
My verdict, the content of this event is 75% PAID.
I believe Anonymous is being confused by “Advertisement” vs “Content”. Some site do have Advertisement post that if you look closely (tiny fine prints) it will say so. And Anonymous appears to think this is one of those shamming, scamming, and trickery post for profits.
Ryan > Clarity well done 🙂
First, I want to say that I
First, I want to say that I personally find no difficulty in distinguishing sponsored articles/videos to your reviews or editorials. I know reading the entire headline for the article is a daunting task, but I can usually get through the whole thing. The fact of the matter is that we live in reality and somebody has to pay bills and I understand that part of where you guys get your money is through sponsored content. Having sponsored content on a website or a video is definitely not unique to PCPer.
Comeon Ryan – waiting to hear
Comeon Ryan – waiting to hear about that GTX 970 prize 🙂
Anyone else think Anonymous
Anyone else think Anonymous is Roy Taylor @ AMD? 🙂
