Today Acer has announced two new gaming monitors with "world first" designs. First we have the XB270HU, which is the world’s first NVIDIA G-SYNC gaming monitor with an IPS panel. This is a big step for a category that has predominantly featured TN panels, though it was not stated what the response time of the IPS panel in use might be. We can expect 178° viewing angles and that nice IPS color accuracy, however. The XB270HU also features tilt, swivel, and height adjustment.
Next is the Acer XG270HU (yes, this is a different model name), which Acer says is "the world's first gaming monitor with an edge-to-edge frameless display", which would allow for gapless multi-monitor setups. This one does not feature IPS, but it has the advantage of a 1 ms response time. Inputs will include HDMI 2.0, DVI, and DisplayPort 1.2. The other added feature of the XG270HU is Acer "EyeProtect technology", which "eliminates screen flicker through a stable supply of power", as well as proprietary non-glare and screen dimming features. Both XB270HU and XG270HU monitors have 27-inch displays with WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution and 144Hz refresh rates.
These will available globally and begin shipping in March 2015.

there are 144Hz IPS displays?
there are 144Hz IPS displays? interesting,i dont think ive seen anything other than 60Hz IPS displays and 120Hz and 144Hz have been exclusively TN (yeurgh)
They exist, but you could
They exist, but you could probably count the SKUs on one hand. There are also some "60Hz" IPS panels that can be overclocked into the triple-digits.
I don’t think there was any
I don’t think there was any til now that was over 60hz without being overclocked. I have heard and seen a 120hz one for sale but it was an Overclocked monitor.
AUO has announced in late
AUO has announced in late 2013 that they are R&Ding a 120hz+ IPS panel. AUO is one of the biggest producer and innovator of monitor panels, so it’s likely this Acer is the result of the project. If I remember correctly, the original PR statement was 120hz, not the 120+ I’m saying right now. But even so, overclocking a stock 120hz to 144hz isn’t that hard. Quite easily achievable for a 120hz panel than a 60hz one.

And, thank the tech gods, these monitors aren’t curved.
im done with the gaming
im done with the gaming claustrophobia that is 16:9
now i have to wait for a 21:9 version of this…guess thats for CES2016 ^^

I’m intrigued. The specs look great but how much will these monitors cost? Hopefully Acer can deliver a good product at a reasonable price!
This feels like a cleverly
This feels like a cleverly worded PR statement, one IPS G-Sync likely at 60Hz and other 144Hz TN panel that was combined in that single “Both of these 27-inch displays come with WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution and a fast 144Hz refresh rate to enhance in-gaming performance.”
In the rest of the statement they only touted the fast pixel refresh on the XG270HU and IPS on the XB270HU. Time will tell shortly.
I seriously doubt that. I am
I seriously doubt that. I am pretty sure that the IPS display is 144 Hz.
The TN panel has lower persistence, which should reduce blur between frames. It is difficult to say how much though, because the IPS panel's response rate is not given and we have no idea what shades the TN panel took 1ms to switch between. 144 Hz is just shy of 7ms, so there is some wiggle room. I'm not a monitor enthusiast, but I'd expect a 14ms B-W-B should be sufficient to avoid ghosting (yet lower would be clearer). That window should be able to get from any shade, to any shade, within 7ms.
I really hope so! I have
I really hope so! I have been waiting patiently for new monitor tech for years, currently I am running a decent wide gamut IPS for normal use and a modded Asus 24″ G-sync for gaming. I would love to ditch this dual monitor setup for a decent 27″ IPS with high refresh AND G-Sync.
You need about 4ms or less
You need about 4ms or less with no rtc overshoot to avoid ghosting.
These panels are all overdriven so unless its a true 144hz there is 100% chance its going to have rtc overshoot to achive low ms response time.
I want the 144Hz IPS Gsync
I want the 144Hz IPS Gsync monitor but with the housing and “Frameless” design from the TN panel monitor.
Why they slapped a giant bezel on the more interesting monitor makes no sense to me.
I’d rather have an MVA panel
I’d rather have an MVA panel for deeper blacks. Is there any reason it’s not being considered for use in these high refresh G-Sync displays?
Probably expense. The only
Probably expense. The only 120Hz *VA panel display is the Eizo Foris FG2421, which uses panels that didn’t quite pass validation for the DuraVision FDF2405W. Presumably Eizo could create a G-sync variant of this, but that would require developing a new display controller.
I had a feeling more IPS
I had a feeling more IPS panel monitors would be designed for gaming when I seen the 21:9 LG IPS FreeSync monitor that will be available soon.
IPS+Gaming monitor=LOVE
That LG one since they didn’t
That LG one since they didn’t say 1 word about refresh rate of it, its pretty much for sure its a 60hz one.
still, the 21:9 aspect ratio
still, the 21:9 aspect ratio of that one pretty much WINS over 144hz
it would be nice if LGs next model would be a 144hz 21:9 IPS freesync…
Also that LG one will cost 500EUR, while this ACER one will cost 800EUR… so
Don’t get you hopes up. This
Don’t get you hopes up. This will be even more difficult to purchase than the SWIFT.
and you know this, how
and you know this, how exactly?
Lol. Look at how the swift
Lol. Look at how the swift sells out within 5 minutes of being in stock. Why would a monitor that is better have a smaller demand?
