If you know a friend that has a friend that might have picked up a copy of Windows from a site of ill repute they still have a chance to redeem their soul. At WinHEC today Microsoft announced that any eligible version of Windows running on hardware compatible with Windows 10 can also upgrade to a new and fully licensed version of Windows 10 when it is released. This is an interesting move by Microsoft but there is sense behind the move as it will increase their customer base for purchasing apps from the Microsoft Store and any licensing which may come into effect after the free year they offer. It also gives them more accurate data on the number of users of Windows and possibly other metadata as well.
"Microsoft will make Windows 10 available as a free upgrade even to pirated copies of other Windows operating systems in China. Terry Myerson of Microsoft's operating systems unit made the announcement at the WinHEC technology conference in Shenzhen, China, and then told Reuters, "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10.""

pretty huge move. They will
pretty huge move. They will get a massive adoption rate
Yes take that “Free, Free,
Yes take that “Free, Free, Free!” bait and wait for the switch, kind of like giving those fleeing felons a free lottery prize in the mail, and easing up that paddy wagon to the back loading dock of the prize claims office. There’re in the front and out the back, all nicely shackled up and attached to a leader chain. All right you inmates, step in unison, one two, one two!
For those non fleeing fools, who have legitimate copies of 7, it’s the slippery slope to a lifetime of subscription payments and windows 365, yes 365 days a year, of paid service after the first “free” period expires, We only promised the UPGRADE would be free for a period of time, and not the OS, pay up or ELSE! It’s a prison of sorts, even for the legitimate license owners, that take that bait and switch, and the politically connected felons($$$$) running that racket go scott free!
Ah, it’s like I’m back on
Ah, it’s like I’m back on Slashdot in the 90s. Tell me, how did those Portents of Doom over Windows 8/8.1’s Store turn out? Has the software market collapsed and stuck us with Microsoft’s ‘walled garden’ yet?
Back to reality for a moment: “We only promised the UPGRADE would be free for a period of time, and not the OS”
Incorrect. Direct from Microsoft: “We will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year! And even better: once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device”.
Pretty much the minimum definition of “supported lifetime of the device” would be ‘until the end of mainstream support for whatever OS was installed on it at the time’. For Windows 8, that would be at a minimum of January 9, 2018. Windows 7 mainstream support has already ended, but extended support (i.e. no new features, but bugfixes, security updates, etc) is up until January 14, 2020.
No one will really Knows what
No one will really Knows what the “supported lifetime of the device” will really mean until the EULA is finalized and published, and do you really trust M$ to not stick it to users once the bait and switch is pulled off. So your minimum guess at just what this may be has no merit. Plus any of my system/file searches will not be shunted over the internet to the Bing collective’s mother Cube, for any reason whatsoever, the welcome mat stops at the router, and the door to my personal PC/laptop will remain closed to 10, and any future M$ OS!
“do you really trust M$ to
“do you really trust M$ to not stick it to users once the bait and switch is pulled off.”
To the extent that it won’t be any SHORTER than whatever Windows 7/8 install it replaces, yes (because cutting the support period from something you’ve already paid for just yells Class Action Lawsuit, or at the very worst a mass exodus back to 8, or a lack of update of 10, which is exactly what MS want to avoid).
“Plus any of my system/file searches will not be shunted over the internet to the Bing collective’s mother Cube, for any reason whatsoever”
Turned off the bing functionality during Windows 8 install (it has a nice toggle-buton with a tooltip to tell you what it is) and haven’t been bothered by it since. Again, if Ms were to change this silently for upgrades, or remove the setting for new installs, there would be massive outcry (as there was when it was first implemented in 8).
The Windows 10 free upgrade
The Windows 10 free upgrade for a year is free upgrades for a year, then paid upgrades after. Not free for a year then pay or it stops working. You have a legit Windows license as long as you upgrade within a year of release, with no expiration on the OS afterwards.
No, it’s free if you get it
No, it’s free if you get it within the first year. You will continue to get updates after, but the offer will be over.
I think the free Windows 10
I think the free Windows 10 offer is defensive move from Microsoft. They want to destroy Steam OS and discourage any future competition.
I have a few test PCs,
I have a few test PCs, maybe-maybe not completely authentic. Guess I’ll give it a whirl. If it sucks, I can always re-image and act like Win10 never existed.
It will suck, it will suck up
It will suck, it will suck up all of your personal metrics, and send them off to the Bing Collective’s giant memory cube, where your personal profile will define you. Resistance is futile, you will be a monetized commodity, with every facet of your being quantified, better enjoy sleeping upright in a connected cubbyhole with the nutrient broth pumped directly into your feeding Tube, and your skin a lovely shade of aluminum gray! They’ll wire that Zune directly into your cerebral cortex, via those injected Nano-bots, and your decision choices will be restricted to whatever limited choices are on the Tiled interface. The voice of Cortana will always be in your head, and you will find it impossible not to comply with the commands of the Bing collective! You will become TIFKAMLEX of the Bing collective, enjoy your servitude.
