The CEO of AMD is an unexpected, but probably very accurate, source when it comes to knowing the Windows 10 release date. First off, the news broke on a quarterly earnings call. When you make a statement on those, you have a strong legal obligation to be telling the truth according to the knowledge that you have at the time. Also, as a major hardware vendor of CPUs and GPUs, her company would have been notified by Microsoft so that they could plan development of graphics drivers and so forth. It also aligns with the “Summer” announcement made last month by Microsoft.
She believes that Windows 10 is set to launch in July.
Of course, this led to a flurry of comments that claim three months will not be enough time to bake a successful product. Others, naturally, claim that Microsoft has been developing software for long enough to know that they can finish their product in three months. Still others shrug and say, “Yeah, you both make sense. I'm going to go play some Grand Theft Auto.”
One aspect that I don't see mentioned enough is that Microsoft has multiple projects and teams on the go, and we only see a fraction of what is being done in our Insider branch. Despite the narrative that Microsoft wishes to avoid another Windows 8 fiasco and they want their users to guide development, they have alluded that a major reason for the Insider program is to test their build delivery system. While I am having a bit of a hard time finding the supporting quote, I did find one reference to it being the reason for ISOs being delayed.
And finally – we heard from you loud and clear you want ISO images of the new builds we release. We felt it was important to listen to that and give you what you want – but there’s a catch. Getting the update & install data from our Preview Builds mechanism is super important for us. It helps us ensure smooth ESD distribution, download, and upgrade success for this program going forward, and also will help us ensure great upgrades for people once we release Windows 10. So we’re going to release the ISOs at the same time as we publish to the Slow ring. That means if you want to be FIRST and FASTEST to get the build, you’ll need to use our Preview Builds mechanisms (either automatic or Check Now in PC Settings to download.) If you must have an ISO you’ll have to be a bit more patient. I hope that you’ll consider that a fair tradeoff.
So what is my point? Basically, it is difficult for us to make assumptions about how baked Windows 10 is from our standpoint. They are being more open with us than ever about their development methods, but we don't know certain key things. We don't know what final feature set they plan. We don't know how much work has been done on any individual feature since it was merged into a build that we saw. We also don't know how much has been done by third parties. In some cases, a release in three months could equate to like, six months of work for a specific team since their last contribution was merged. I do think that any major feature we see at BUILD will pretty much be the last additions to the OS before it launches though, unless they have a surprise that will surface at E3 or something.
Also, remember that the things they show us are slanted to what they want feedback about.
Or! They just report on the
Or! They just report on the release of windows 10 in the same fashion as they report on the release of their own products!
if they did that they would
if they did that they would report it as being the ultimate os that will kill all other os’s and be a lot faster than any competition i every task, only to turn out ot be total and unwarranted hype from pr
Just another instance of AMD
Just another instance of AMD making comments about MS that they were not authorized to make. Expect a retraction/mea culpa from AMD shortly.
Previous examples:
Roy Taylor saying MS has no plans for a new DirectX because its not on their roadmap. GG Roy.
Richard Huddy saying the only low level API option for Windows 7 users would be Mantle, because Windows 7 will not support DX12. Only half-true Richard, MS kinda kicked him in the nuts by giving Win7 users the ultimate upgrade to DX12 by offering Win10 free of charge. And we all know what happened to Mantle (Dead).
How these clowns still have jobs is somewhat amazing, especially in light of how much AMD has struggled recently forcing lay offs and cuts to R&D. Fire these mouthpieces, keep 3-4 engineers for the price of 1, imo.
M$ did not have any plans for
M$ did not have any plans for DX12 until M$ saw Mantle, and at the last minute, and always late, M$ asked AMD for a look see, and a little help in getting all that Mantle functionality incorporated into DX12. So I’d expect M$ to pretty much ignore Su’s slipup. M$ will allow the rumor mill to churn, its free publicity, and keeps Windows 10 in the news. AMD has Zero interest in stopping M$ from benefiting from Mantle, as a good chunk of AMD’s CPU/GPU product will benefit from having as much of Mantle’s innovations as possible in M$’s, and any other OS’s Graphics APIs(Khronos Vulkan). AMD will be at an advantage from the widest possible use on the Mantle core technology. Do not expect M$ to require too much of an apology, and M$’s DX12 owes much to AMD’s graphics project code named Mantle, and Mantle as a development project will continue internally, with the Khronos group’s Vulkan becoming the public open version of Mantle, and other contributors innovations. Expect the Mantle Project to continue to provide Khronos with more improvements to Vulkan, Like the Mantle project will continue to provide improvements to DX12. AMD has nothing to lose, and everything to gain in sharing Mantle.
More rubbish, what do you
More rubbish, what do you think the consoles have been running for the last decade? Even AMD acknowledged their inspiration to create a low level API in Mantle came from their involvement in the next-gen console wins using the LOW LEVEL API that consoles are known for as a guide.
Anyone who thinks AMD, who has no experience in a low level API whatsoever, invented it is is an idiot, plain and simple.
AMD the maker of the GPUs
AMD the maker of the GPUs does not have experience with graphical API, how the hell do they develop/test for their new hardware before the product gets to market. AMD has always had a Mantle, they just did not give it a name, and utilize it for any outside uses before Mantle. You must think AMD is completely lacking in any ability to even produce a GPU in the first place. Who but the maker of the hardware is most completely familiar with the actual metal, it could not have been Ballmer or anyone at M$, as M$ does not make GPU hardware, even the hardware that M$ commissioned for the XBONE, As far as the Gaming APU, I’ll bet that AMD still has some proprietary component in the graphics that not even M$ gets to look at, M$ is just licensing the finished product, and AMD probably only provides enough source IP for M$, or Sony for that matter, to make use of the technology. You sure as hell do not Know for sure, but it is damn certain that even M$, and Sony, do not have access to the most proprietary of knowledge about even the console gaming APUs. AMD’s is giving no free keys to the IP vault to anyone!
You do not Know how IP licensing works, you are no more than an egregious Fool if you think AMD is sharing all of Its IP secrets with anyone!
AMD did not have any
AMD did not have any experience writing low level API, they had experience writing drivers for their own hardware, there is a difference. Please show me AMD’s API efforts prior to “inventing” Mantle in 2013, thanks.
They stated numerous times it was their involvement in next-gen consoles that got them interested in a low level API and they simply borrowed the tried and true model already being used by Microsoft and Sony in their consoles; y’know, the same low level API that could already support multiple vendor hardware with some modification given the PS3 was using Nvidia hardware and the original XBox which was celebrated as the first PC-class device to extract additional performance through use of a low level API was also using Nvidia hardware.
P.S. egregious fool! M$ does
P.S. egregious fool! M$ does not own the all rights to the IP in Its XBONE SKUs(Ditto SONY) especially the APU part, they may have some exclusive use rights to the exact designs that M$/SONY commissioned, but the underlying APU IP rights are only licensed from AMD and parts purchased from AMD, and M$, and SONY, must acquire supplies their respective parts from AMD. M$ can not take the design and even modify the APU part on its own, same for SONY, that must be done through AMD’s custom APU division, and no other supplier/designer!!! AMD’s APU gaming console APU licenses are very restrictive!
Who said they needed to own
Who said they needed to own all the rights to the IP? They just needed the rights to their own low level API, a custom version of DirectX they’ve been developing for over a decade, which by design, is capable of abstracting to different target hardware with few modifications. How else could MS so quickly demonstrate DX12 running Forza on Nvidia hardware just a few months after AMD “invented” low level APIs with Mantle? lol.
AMD said it took them 3 years to develop Mantle (same time they got involved with next-gen consoles), yet Microsoft demos DX12 just 4-5 months after AMD shows Mantle. To anyone with half a brain this would indicate Microsoft was already deep into development of DX12 and Mantle really did nothing but force them to reveal their intentions sooner than they wanted to.
End result is the same, Mantle is dead and irrelevant, DirectX still remains de facto standard for PC gaming, which is a good thing. Why AMD and their fans think vendor specific APIs are a good thing is beyond me, most are probably too young to remember the bad old days with OpenGL, DX, GLide all competing for developers’ time and you just ended up with a bunch of badly supported runtimes.
At the time, Microsoft didn’t
At the time, Microsoft didn't have any plans for a new DirectX as far as we can tell. Also, as you mentioned, Windows 7 doesn't support DX12; Windows 10 upgrades is a different issue. Also, Mantle is the basis for Vulkan — even NVIDIA thanked AMD for it.
And so because today AMD has
And so because today AMD has made no announcement about GPUs beyond 2015 we should expect they have no plans for a new GPU, as far as we can tell?
Of course not, that’s complete nonsense. To think Microsoft would discontinue or stop supporting DirectX especially with a new version of Windows was foolish, so it is no wonder Taylor was quickly forced to eat his words.
As for the 2nd part, that’s not what was said. Huddy in his usual half-truth methods to try and sell AMD product said current Windows 7 users would only have the option of Mantle if they wanted low level API benefits, which of course, turned out to be bogus because Win7 users will have the option of DX12 free of charge with the ability to upgrade to Win10.
Bottomline is AMD should focus on their own business and products and not concern themselves so much with making unauthorized statements about others.
My AMD video card keeps
My AMD video card keeps crapping out. BSOD report points to hardware failure.
Never AMD again.
Even Apple now uses NVIDIA : )
It’s been working flawless
It’s been working flawless for me except for small random issues which, on google search, were evidently attributable to windows 8 problems. ie: some kind of weird memory error on shutdown or occassionally when I alt tab out of a game I get a black screen where I can see my mouse on the other monitor and I can hear music from the game but nothing responds and i have to hard reset. As far as the actual OS being stable, I haven’t had a single BSOD.
My buddy actually started running it because I built him a new computer and he only had Windows 7 Home OEM and no CD so I told him he could wait for HP to mail him a new OS disc, buy a new OS, or put on W10 for free. Decision was pretty obvious. So far no problems for him either AFAIK.
The real question is, will
The real question is, will AMD still be around in July?
July 2015 – Yes
July 2016 –
July 2015 – Yes
July 2016 – Maybe
July 2017 – Probably not
July 2018 – Would be shocked
Yep that’s about right, given
Yep that’s about right, given current financial estimates and trajectories, their cash isn’t expected to dry up to default levels until July of next year.
What is going to kill them is their $1Bn take or pay amendment with TSMC with only something like $161M of that committed in the 1st Quarter.
Good insight on the take or
Good insight on the take or pay contract. Rarely do I read comments where people actually know what’s going on, let alone in the financials.
Good one…and so true.
