Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World, and FIFA World are set to disappear in three months. According to the site for one of these games, Battlefield Heroes, that corresponds to Tuesday, July 14th, 2015. The other three might be plus or minus a little bit, but it sounds like it will be a simultaneous shutdown. Refunds will not be provided, even if you have premium credit remaining unspent on your account. I guess that means that you should burn whatever you have left over while the servers are still running; EA will not accept new accounts or payments though.
The announcement, made by Executive Vice President of EA Studios, Patrick Söderlund, assures players that other EA free-to-play titles are growing in player base and content. He uses Star Wars: The Old Republic as an example, which will receive updates over the year, including ones that build on its narrative.
But this is one of the problems with “free-to-play” and other genres with an authoritative online component: timed life. These titles are not going to be critiqued and celebrated in University courses over the upcoming decades and centuries. It is a difficult balance. On the one hand, it is interesting to create a universe that evolves and possibly mutates based on player interaction. Those experiences disappear though (and so does the money you tie into it). That doesn't mean “don't play them” — just be aware what you're investing your time, money, and self-expression into.
Just imagine how the people
Just imagine how the people who bought cloud reliant products will feel when those servers die. (guessing they will not be too happy with their dropcam purchase)
PS, also keep in mind that this will be an issue for many modern games which use online based DRM. If your product must phone home or activate with a special DRM server, then it will likely fail once the servers die, even if it is an “offline” single player game.
Yep. Like all the steam games
Yep. Like all the steam games that require GFWL.
Thankfully in the case of
Thankfully in the case of GFWL and steam however, slowly many of those games got patched and now work off of steamworks wonderfully easy. Dirt 3 I was saddened greatly about since it was botched two or so years ago, out of nowhere I got a new steam version recently with all DLC and other little fixes! I was ready to never support them again!
Then I noticed quiet a few have been fixed up as such.
Not all however.. Thankfully it’s up to the devs mostly.
A good test of their respect for the community.
However with EA..
Well. They are douchbags either way.
This is a long time coming…
This is a long time coming… this is what companies want so they can get more profit. its not only with games, now a days everything (games, software, maybe even OS (M$)) going subscription based. which means when the servers go out, so your privilege s well. as a consumers we have degraded our self to a point that even if you pay for it, you wont own it. this much be stopped once and for all. consumers must dictate the market not the other way around. then again, today’s world most consumers have no critical thinking skills. what a pity.
It’s called hold on to that
It’s called hold on to that old hardware, the hardware without the UEFI secure boot, or other hardware/firmware lock-in. Better to go Open hardware on the Linux distro of your choice, and forgo becoming just an another cog in the fee based ecosystem that is turning computing into the appliance based Boob Tube of the “Future”. Online has become the new over the air type delivery system of controlled by the big and monetarily powerful for excessive profits at the expense of poor saps the fall for it hook line and sinker! It’s time to take computing offline and back to the users, and leave the online to flounder in its own dog food, maybe LAN parties and such for games that do not need to phone home to the mothership, or other forms of unofficial methods, outside of the prying eyes of the big ad pushers. The PC market will continue to slide, there are so many units out there new and used that it’s worthwhile to stock up on those devices as insurance against the embracers, extenders, and extinguishers, just look at CyanogenMod, now being embraced and soon to become CyanogenModern of the M$ collective!
They say that the internet has taken over cable, but I say it’s the other way around, and Cable has taken over the internet, and your monthly bill is on the way, pay up or there will not even be offline access to your own hardware, enjoy your new cable box, and you thought you were getting a PC!
This is just EA asking you to
This is just EA asking you to bend over a little bit further, as they really need to shaft you harder and deeper and for much longer than before…
Jaded?,
I’m one who actually bought “Need for Speed World”
Then they messed it up by not fixing the errors
Then they made it “free to play” but no refund or perks offered to those who supported them by buying it.
They then ignored the massive forum thread about the issues.
And now they are closing it…
EA is the last company I would buy from in future.
EA is fucking awful
EA is fucking awful
I gave up on EA many years
I gave up on EA many years ago. I bought one too many games from them that were buggy and never fixed. And finally, I had had enough.
Today I am glad that I stopped buying anything EA makes. I will never again be affected by their shenanigans.
What EA is doing should be illegal. If you have a cash balance in a game, or if you are paid for 6 months in advance, and they only give a 3 month notice, when they shut the game down, they should be required to refund the money. No excuses. No Fees to you for doing that. After all, it is your money until you spend it.
They used to have a free
They used to have a free tiger woods golf that was AWESOME and then it just disappeared. 🙁
Spendt Alot of money on NFSW
Spendt Alot of money on NFSW … FUCK EA GAMES .. holy shit.. can’t believe theyr allowed to do such shit..
